Require 2001 Lada. Note: this vehicle is to be used by my 19 year old daughter who travels between Sodwana, Kosi Bay and North Mozambique. No JUNK, no Lada with Toyota engine things, and no gunky gearbox. I do not want my daughter stuck in the bush without cell phone reception or similar cultured people to assist. I will come after you with a baseball bat and shotgun. The vehicle will be able to make it to JHB every 6 months or Richards Bay every 3 months if there is a decent enough workshop. She is involved in Coral Reef maintenance and doing her CDC Staff Instructors course in scuba. Kindly note I am based in Johannesburg, have kissed many a frog Lada's and Land Rovers since October 2010, so please don't waste my time and travel experience to Timbuktu for NEEDS TLC. If there is no recommended Lada out there could you kindly keep your ear to the ground for a decent Land Rover Disco 1 manual V8. Once my daughter is sorted would dearly love to add a Lada to my own garage.

Hi Cidni
You may also like to try Ventz in petermaritzburg. The last rebuilt one he advertised looked good and was reasonably priced.

I'd also try Ventz and he will be near enough to your daughter for parts if needed.

Hi Cidni
I also have a daughter, and I do know exactly what you are talking about.
As mentioned at other posts, I believe it will make sense rather to buy from one of the suppliers (on or after ! April) , and make sure that the supplier knows exactly for what purpose and in which area the Lada will be used.
Then take the Lada to the AA (Automobile Association) for a proper inspection.
I am not sure to what extend the public will be protected under the new Consumers Protection Act (Motor Industry) at this stage - but I do know that selling a piece of junk to customers in our trade is looking for serious trouble...
There are three Suppliers of Lada spare parts in South Africa - Jan Pretorius (Centurion), Ventz (Pietermaritzburg) and Chris Swales (Pinetown).
All three of them will be seen as part of the "supply chain" under the new Act, and they will have a liability under the Act.
If you buy privately elsewhere, you will not be protected under the new Act.

Hi Spikes
We bought our Lada in 2000 from CMH - we also had an option to go for a 2000 model with quarter vents. To my knowledge these cars were actually 99 models but you could well be on the mark with 97. Ventz will probably know better.

Hi Spikes I think you are correct with your date. I also remember Ventz mentioning a shipment that lay some where for a couple of years when Vanchester went out of business.

Hi Ari
There is no window which is capable of cooling you like an air con. You either have 3 deg blowing out or 30, 40 or even 50 blowing in the window.

Cor blimey, you've all lost me. I'm a Land Rover girl. Have no clue whats what on a Lada, only friends in Poland that have had 3 or 5 (can't remember) who I use for info when they can help.
To Danie, thanks so much for the info, sometimes a person feels a bit lost in the world of human thugs. (Sharks are actually nice, so can't use that phrase.) So to know someone can relate to my thought process is a bit relieving.
To all who have been questioning my reasoning behind Lada for daughter, not HI-JACK material. Anyway, from the little bit I'm managing to catch in the conversations, best I go and buy a good Lada reference book and learn my stuff. I actually would prefer not to buy privately, if it's a good vehicle theres no reason why someone would sell it for the amount of money you'll get, not much else you could buy besides a bombed out Uno or Tazz. I would actually like to locate 2. The more time I spend looking at them, the more they grow on you. I'm a sucker for black sheep. Besides 9 isn't an nice number in the garage, 10 is better.
I have contacted Ventz, he unfortunately has nothing available, or maybe I just scared the bejesus out of him. (laughing over here, don't know how to add your funny faces).
Who are the official dealers for Lada. Can't find a thing on the web.
Thanks all.

Cidni All the manual you or your daughter could ever need for a NIVA are on the forum home page under the "technical button" free for all to use. The funny faces you get when you use the reply button R.hand bottom of a page and not the "quick reply" My folks spent 5 years at Sodwana Forest Reserve. Used to be a lovely place with almost nothing on Lake Sibaya but the Army camp on the west side and a small research centre on the eastern side. Now it is (to me at least)a sad and over commercialised place regards Spikes

Thanks Spikes, I agree re Sodwana, but that is human over population for u. Pity humans don"t get taken to the vet like our animals do. She spends as little time as possible in Sodwana, (she doesn't do the drinking-smoking strange stuff thing) looks like after December she will be going to Tanzania (oh boy, more funny people) so if thats the case little Lada will be doing some interesting traveling. In 2013 she will be based in the Med, take note vehicle will be shipped with her. Like I said, we die with our cars. I think I'll have to try rust proof the vehicle.
Thanks Ari, will print out all the info, as I said before old fashioned person here, like to make marks and highlight things. Poor computer screen has pen marks all over it. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll post a pic of my brat on so all can see who the fuss is all about. I'm a very proud mommy.
Once again thank you all so VERY MUCH.

Hi Cidni
I also have a soft spot for the Landy, but all the bits of the Niva weigh a fraction of the Landy parts. There is not really any Lada dealers as such as the Factory does not make RHD ones, unless you want to order 500.There are 3 agents, Ventz Chris swales, and (lada centurion who I do not recommend). All the spares you have mentioned are available in SA. The normal service spares are available at any spares shop. Things that are either not available or are too expensive you can import cheaper your self. The members who have done this will tell you exactly how to do it and where to order from.

Hi Mike, as of yet she's not working, I'm paying a S**t load for her to study. When she hits the Med, there she will be working, but every now and then an email will come in from this place and that place, latest from Maldives, where they need Coral Reef caretakers, and she wonders where to go. Luckily she's got her German passport and I registered her with the all the necessary German Departments, so she can go anywhere. I'm so relieved she's doing something she loves, the child came home one day and told me she thinks she wants to study Phsycology (crap can't spell today). That was me in a frantic spin, (can't think a person will enjoy life having to deal with loonies every day) Sit an listen to some spoilt brat who wants to kill themselves because mommy or daddy won't buy them a new car. No way, so travelled everywhere with her, sent her scuba diving, she saw sharks, thought she would pass out, instead touched one and smiled so much her regulator fell out her mouth. The rest is history my friend. She's not going to make a huge amount of money. Mommy will have to carry on working for a long long long time. SOB, boo hoo. She released her first lot of turtles this year, and spent two days combing the beach making sure none of them were washed back, as well as throwing things at all the birds, spends ages picking up all the rubbish we idiots leave lying around on the beach. AND for all you boys out there. NO NO NO. She's not available, mom DOES have a baseball bat. Very strong one.
Thanks for all advice one again. Very grateful.
