Hi everybody.
Today I carried out a service on Dewald's Lada, one of the new members.
The vehicle is a blue 2000 1.7i Sidekick with 103000km and in a excellent condition. The vehicle goes very well.
The only problem is that the steering box is fairly stuffed with a lot of play on the shaft connecting the droparm. Is there any member that got a spare steering box that he wants to sell. It will be gratefull if anybody can help and get this lovely vehicle 100%
Regards.

Hey, the steering boxes became a major problem, few cars are out of action just due to steering boxes. There is no more RHS steering boxes in Europe and Africa. Could our friends from Australia and New Zealand help - there is the only place still possible to find them, new or good second hand.\\

Hi Ventz Most if not all of the Nivas in Aus and NZ are LHD Let's hope the guys in the UK order more than 500 - then we might be in for a chance. Regards Marius

It's possible.
When I was working for CMH, they imported 2 new units from Australia definitely RHS boxes, even I fit one of them myself. Later I had a customer who has his brother living in Australia and he post him one box privately. What about our members - Bob and Lada and Korean Parts ?

Hi Ventz
As far as I know they are only dreaming of RHD Ladas ;D
BUT as you say - if they have a few RHD Ladas over there they might still have some steering boxes?
Hopefully Bobby can give us some more info?

Hi Marius
AUS and NZ are RHD the same as here, and they have the same problem as us with steering boxes.

Hi Hercules
Why dont you try fitting a steering rack from another vehicle?

Hi Ronnie
I know they are RHD as here - but I do think that most of their Ladas are LHD though - esp the earlier 1600. There are some 1700's and they are most probably RHD as Ventz mentioned but they are few and far between.
I think they mostly have the old 1600's.
Hopefully someone from down under will clear things up for us.

Hi Marius
As we have more members now from down under I am sure we will get an answer. I was sure though that their 1600`s were RHD

Sounds like steering boxes could be a good investment .
Maybe I should rather store my spare steering box in a safe . ;D

Hi Ronnie
Looks like you and Ventz could well be right with the RHD thing!
Well perhaps that could then indeed be good news for us if they have the RHD steering boxes.
Danie I think you have a piece of gold there - put it in a very safe place! Remember me in your will ;D

As far as I know you can fit the parts from a LHD steering box into the RHD steering box.

Hi All As far as I know you can fit the parts from a LHD steering box into the RHD steering box. Ronnie I fully agree - the inner parts on the LHD and RHD steering boxes should be exactly the same. If the local Suppliers can't supply loose components, I would contact Valerij at Graf Korvet by e.mail, and send him a copy of the exploded drawing of a steering box - which can be found at Page 63 of the 1.7 Repair Manual - Part 2: locsa.atspace.com/technical1.htmlJust tell him which parts are needed, and I am sure he would be able to help. Valerij's e.mail address: graf.Korvet@gmail.com Danie

So whats the problem then?? Ari Very good question Ari. According to the Spare Parts Manual there are two different drop arm shafts and two different drop arms. From the drawing the difference looks marginal and you might even be able to modify these parts to fit. Replacing a broken housing would be another matter entirely The rest of the parts on the steering are the same. Perhaps Ventz or someone from Aus/Nz can give more details? Some years ago I was informed by one of the local suppliers that a complete replacement box was horrendously expensive - I don't know if it is still the case or indeed if any RHD boxes are still available? Hi Marius
As far as I know RHD steering boxes are NOT available anywhere in the World. So look after the casing !!!

Why do you think I fought so hard to get the replacement 175/80R16 tyres? ;D ;D ;D
Come to think of it - I am sure the Russian won't have to retool the entire production line just to mold a couple of housings?
Well obviously it would have to be more than a couple - maybe we should try and establish the need worldwide and go from there?
I would not mind having a spare housing.

Come on guys, enough jokes. The inner parts are replaceable with LHS, just a little problem occur - if you turn the steering wheel to the right, the car is turning to the left and vice versa. If somebody consider this is not a problem - he is great.

Hi Ventz
I am sure that would make driving quite interesting. If I am not mistaken it would then be easy to reverse with a trailer ;D

Thanks Ventz for clearing that one up! Just imagine if one "fixed" the box and making that first turn!!!!
Any parts on the RH steering box that you don't have Ventz (including the housing)?
