Hi Danie / Charles
The 2L has a 90mm stroke. If you can measure the bore then you will be able to calculate the exact displacement.
Take the sump off and try to measure the bore at the bottom of the cylinders.

Ari you will only get a estimate. The headgasket and combustion chamber in the head also plays a big roll.

Hi Charles
Only in the compression ratio. the displacement it the area of the top of the piston x the stroke x the no of pistons.
For the standard Lada 1700cc
(8.2^2 x pi/4) x (8.0) x (4) = 1689.9 cc

Hi Ari / Charles I will get some proper measuring equipment from work tomorrow, to make 100% sure. For the time being I am quite sure the engine is not a 1400cc - so I am looking forward to a good sleep tonight. Danie

Hi Bobby The Engine No. is 125000662914. I think this means it's A 125 Series engine, and not a 124. I've just took the piston stroke measurements again, and the stroke is 80 mm - not 84.5 mm as mentioned before. I discovered that the top surface of the pistons are not completely flat - it has got a "step" or "higher and lower" ridge of about 4.5 mm more or less at the center of the piston. I guess that "ridge" accommodates the valves when in the "open" position - and caused some miss calculations when I initially took the stroke measurements. Yesterday I discovered that the spare waterpump which was part of the deal, is not the same as the waterpump fitted to the engine - see pic below: Today I visited a local spare part supplier (Autozone)- and according to the photographs on their spare part catalog my spare waterpump (held by hand - pic above) are suitable for the 124 series Fiat engines (1592cc) - while their waterpumps which look like the waterpump fitted to my engine (pic above), are suitable for 1608cc engines. So I now started thinking I actually bought a 1608cc (125 series )engine. Danie

It looks like you have a 1608cc, but its the ones which have a normal distributor instead of one driven by the exhaust cam which would be no good in a niva. 80mm bore, 80mm stroke 110hp at 6400rpm What the book does say is the 80mm pistons are hard to get and the book is not new but I will check for possability of boreing out to 84mm.

Yep, 2mm oversize is ok as far as the block goes but I dont know about the pistons/rings. Normal 80mm oversizes are 80.4 and 80.6

Since I discovered that the spare waterpump which came with the engine is different, I decided to look for a spare waterpump at the local spare part dealers. I found a waterpump at a local branch of Autozone, and they told me that they only have 6 of these waterpumps left countrywide. I asked them for a price and they offered me two waterpumps at R275.00 each - excl VAT. When the guy said "R275.00 each for two waterpumps" I got so exited I sommer said "yes" - now I am sitting with one extra waterpump and the other one is on it's way from Cape Town . Two year guarantee: According to Saleri's website they do manufacture all sorts of waterpumps - I haven't checked their on-line Catalog yet - maybe they also manufacture quality Lada Niva waterpumps : www.saleri.it/Danie

Great find Danie. They,Saleri, do indeed make a waterpump for the NIVA. Attached the detail for the 1700 engine Slowly but surely the suppliers of direct fit parts are growing Regards all Spikes Attachments:

If Saleri still have any distributors (i.e. Autozone) in South Africa, the distributor should be able to get waterpumps for Ladas - even if they do not carry stock at the moment.
Maybe Locsa Management should contact Saleri in this regard ?

Hi Spikes Thanks for the effort - this is indeed great news! It would even be better news if it has the retaining screw - but it is doubtful - but at that price who is going to complain! Regards Marius

Hi Spikes / Marius I am quite convinced that Autozone will get more of those waterpumps once they ran out of stock. I guess it might be worthwhile getting spare waterpumps from Autozone before the local Lada spare part suppliers start jumping at them . ;D Great work Spikes ! Danie

Hi Marius/Danie, Pleasure was mine!! I was assured that they (Autozone) will order new stock when present stock of the pumps are depleted. Even on a one off order. Only condition would be that one would have to wait for a normal order on Saleri which happens about every six weeks. So I have not requested a water pump as yet. regards Spikes

Hi Spikes The salesmen at Autozone are capable of telling exactly where and when any of their components have been sold previously. I will not be surprised if they often sell watermumps to the local Lada spare part suppliers - who then heavily load the purchase price, and then sell it as so called "original Lada parts" Watch this space for more info . Hi Danie He showed me the screen with data for the PA 231 stock and identified the first three stores on the screen. All are in a 3 letter code, and yes then can see what was sold where. Anyone looking for the pump should ask for a Saleri PA 231 water pump and NOT for a Lada unit. You may just get the blank look or bleak "No we don't stock LADA parts" reply spikes

Hi Spikes I've been at Autozone this morning, and can confirm the following: 1. One definately need to ask for "Saleri Part No PA 231 " If you just ask for a "Lada Niva waterpump" - they will definately deny that they do carry any stock. 2. According to a quick search by the salesman, Autozone has imported 15 Saleri waterpumps long ago - but only two of the pumps were sold - one in Pretoria a long time ago - and I think he said the other one was sold at a branch at Fochville. 3. The salesman confirmed that they still have 13 Saleri waterpumps in stock: - 3 in Cape Town - 1 in Durban - 2 in the Eastern Cape - 1 in Gauteng - 6 in the "Northern Provence". 4. The Salesman confirmed that they often get large quantities of components from Saleri, and it would be very easy for them to order more Lada waterpumps once they ran out of current stock. When I told the guy about the local prices of Lada waterpumps he did not seem to believe me ! Anyway. Today I bought a spare timing belt at Autozone for the Fiat engine. Autozone still have 15 of these timing belts in stock countrywide. I ordered two more belts and it will be on it's way from Jo'burg on Monday. This is the (146 teeth) belt which I have bought this morning: The Autozone Part No for the 1600 cc Fiat engines (fits 1592cc 124 Coupe Spider , 1608cc 124 Coupe Spider, as well as 1756 Brava 131, and 124 Special Fiats) is: 19 T 146The current (brand new) timing belt on the engine is from Dayco (Australia). The Dayco part no is : 94054According to the Fiat Service Manual the timing belts need to be replaced every 30 000 miles - so I decided to get hold of the extra belts at R96.90 each. Danie
