Hi Charles Appart from Windows I also use Ubuntu which is a very stable OS with little security issues, but it can be a very steep learning curve. The nice thing about Linux/Ubuntu is that it is free Regards Marius

Hi Marius
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 to duel boot this afternoon. I am typing this from ubuntu. Will hopefully be getting my cd of 10.10 this week. How much do you know about Ubuntu. Would be nice to have someone that I know who I can ask questions when I get stuck. I would love to go completely open source.

Hi Charles
I am no expert with Ubuntu - I have friends in high places though ;D
There are many fantastic open source programs on the net and some are far better than the paid products. For Windows too.
You can download Ubuntu 10 for free - but if you struggle to get the CD I will gladly mail it for you.

Hi Marius/Charles, I have run the gamut of free OS's and find Ubuntu the easiest to work with. One hard drive is dedicated to Open Source. Only time one picks up hiccups with Open Source is when you buy popular hardware such as cameras, printers etc. It is usually is heck of battle to find the open source drivers. Charles, take Marius up on the offer of the CD. It is a big download and at the end guaranteed to inform you that your newly installed OS needs another update A very reasonable source of Open Source software is at: www.fosscds.co.za a token fee for the CD/DVD and postage Regards Spikes

Hi Spikes
I have allready requested a cd from ship it. If I dont get the disk from them then I will take him up on his offer. I see open source fans and lada fans are the same. Both willing to share their knowlage and go out of their way to help each other.

Hi Ronnie
I so scared some people run away from their ladas. I get so scared i will lose intrest in finishing mine when a few days goes buy without me being able to touch her. Like the whole of last week.

Hi Charles
Maybe we should discuss OS stuff here?
Yes I run Ubuntu 10.10 and it is great. Only downside with Vbox is graphics is not always up to spec but you can do all the rest with no problems - esp Internet and Email.
Spikes is right in that drivers for things like cameras/scanners is a nightmare in Linux/Ubuntu. Another big plus in Ubuntu is that it can run happily on older PC's

Hi All I see already members are on leave and the Forum is already much quieter. I hope to see some news EVERY day from all my friends who are still at home . Ronnie Hi Ronnie / Charles I also noticed that - thats why I passed a few comments about bigger tyres on Ladas. ;D I know that is a very "sensitive" issue, and I thought it would generate a few comments . Anyway, there is no need to get worried this time of the year - I think all of us started to slow down a bit for a well deserved break. Next year all of us will be back on "productive mode". Hi Charles, I see Foss cd sponsorship has run out. He of Space travel fame has a "new" free download facility called the freedom toaster where you can go and burn own cd/dvd. Your nearest one is in Knysna, there is one in Sleepy hollow for Danie's use and the only one in TVl is in Pretoria. Makes sense I suppose as many gov depts are running opensource software. Regards all Spikes

Got my Lada back today after 3 weeks apart. I looked like a 5year old standing outside, waiting for her to come around the corner. Now I must just get my garage up to spec and then the games will begin.

Hi Charles, I used to stay at Buffelsnek in the late 60's to early 70's. Those days the real Knysna elephants still raomed around Diepwalle and Gouna. Saw them a couple times regards Spikes

Hi Ronnie
You know me - always ready for action ;D
I was also wondering about Darryn - he did mention some job issues - but let's hope he is having a bit of a holiday.
Looks like it is only pensioners and small time farmers that don't need holidays ;D
