Good morning Guys Thanks so much for all the comments
I'm working in Worcester today.
Drove along the scenic Du Toitkloof Pass with the Lada. No saving to use the "New" Huguenote Tunnel.
I've checked again, here's the RPM's for 4th Gear: 60Km/H = 2250RPM 80Km/H = 3000RPM 100Km/H = 3750RPM 120Km/H = 4500RPM
I very seldom exceeds 100Km/H. Did 120Km/H twice today to chk the RPM in relation to the Speedo Reading. I'll open the GB in December. I'm now sure that it's not a 4Speed GB, but a 5Speed GB with a shot 5th Gear.
Thanks again Steve

Hi Steve That is most definitely the case! Those revs tells me that you have been bamboozled into thinking you have a 4 speed gearbox That is a real shame and I think you may not be the only one who has been conned that way. Marius

Hi Steve
I took a trip to Gauteng over the weekend and had a look at the revs.
60km/h in 4th gear = around 2200RPM 100km/h in 5th gear = exactly 3000RPM 120km/h in 5th gear = exactly 3500RPM
Let us know about you gearbox.

Hi There,
What is the fuel consumption on the different Ladas (I gather there is a 1.7 Carb, 1.7 EFI, 1.6)?
Also, what is the ground clearance of the Ladas - I think I saw 235mm?
What would you consider the biggest challenges owning a Lada? (Seems as if parts may be a problem ...)
Thanks, Jaco

The good point about your wife hating the Lada is that she never will drive it.
Every time my wife drives the Lada, something breaks - And I am not blaming her.....

Hi There, What would you consider the biggest challenges owning a Lada? (Seems as if parts may be a problem ...) Thanks, Jaco Hi Jaco Parts are not a problem - if not available locally - or if the local prices do not suit your wallet, you simply get parts from Pavel who finds himself in the Ukraine. This guy sells everything you might need - just send him an e.mail about parts which are not listed at his website: www.ladapower.com/ To my mind it is crucial to do your own repairs, or to know a reliable mechanic in your area. In general, Ladas are very basic, and easy to work on. But for owners who are not technically minded, Ladas could easily become too expensive, and a nightmare. Danie

To be honest mate, the difficulties of owning a lada have become considerably less of a big deal with the support system we've now put in place. We can get good, cheap parts without waiting too long. Yeah, it's not like a toyota or VW in terms of aftermarket and retail support, but every car manufacturer has it's nightmare stories.
I guess the biggest challenge would be getting 16" rims and tyres to fit them (but Marius has seen to the tyre problem for now), and every other component made specifically for right-hand drive models, like dashboards and steering boxes.
I love my Niva, and I'm pretty sure I'll be driving it for a long time. I've found that it doesn't give as muh kak as people seem to think it will. But maybe I'm blessed with a gem.

Steve, Vincent and I missed the garage by probably 4km's, I could not remember if I locked the doors on my Korean Klaptrap, so we had to turn back. . . I do remember that toadie gave him 361km's with an aircon and a decent amount of weight on the pedal. . . Now that is a little bit more than what you are getting, but I would follow Charles' advice, go get it tuned decently. A niva can give better mileage than a toyota petrol and equal to a mitsubishi triton diesel ( I used to own one). . . if they are all built the same, then it is only the drivers foot that is the problem. hehehehe I am probably making kak here now

Hi Jaco,
Good to see another Pretorianer on the forum!
Fuel consumption on a 4 x 4 is just an academic piece of knowledge. A real 4 x 4 can not be light on fuel. Any real 4 x 4.
I grew up and worked with 4 x 4's and used them in my private capacity (petrol and diesel). The terrain and what you use them for vary too much. The honest answer about a Niva's fuel consumption is that it use as much fuel as other 4 x 4's.
If you really want to save fuel to save fuel, take your Niva for a dyno tune. A car that gives maximum power where it should is as light on fuel as you can get. It is that simple. A reputable dyno tuner (like Steves Auto Clinic country wide) will simply stop when he realises that something is wrong with your vehicle.
Also keep in mind that the Niva make use of old engine technology and should not be compared to one of the new Suzukis (an example).
I hope the above is of some help.
Regards,
Fanus

Something I came across a while ago (with a boat actually)-motor would'nt run properly, I ended up fitting a brand new set of original size jets (same as what was already in). When the new jet set arrived, the holes were visually smaller than the old ones (of the same size !). After some research it became apparent that brass jets can suffer wear from blended fuels (i.e. sasol etc). The boat in question had extensive service in zimbabwe where they have had blended fuel (with ethanol) for many years. This could be a cause of rich running and heavy fuel consumption.

From the brief reading that I did yesterday, Brown's gas or brown gas refers to one of the first "inventors" of hho generating sets(one Yull Brown) All the generating sets for normal internal combustion engines are of the "on-demand" type and does not have an accumulator for the produced gas. The do-it yourself kits should not be confused with hydrogen fuel cells.
