Marius please just note that your license disk must be on the left hand side according to the law. You can get a fine if it is in the middle.

Needles to say not much time to do testing but one thing is very apparent - the steering has significantly improved - the car feels like power steering on steroids! Very difficult to find a descent piece of tar around here but the ride feels nice and firm with no apparent wine from the tyres. Actually the tyres are nice and quiet - as advertised I will keep you guys posted on how the tyres perform. Regards Marius Wow, congratulations Marius! Sounds like your experience with thinner tires was much like mine. Steering significantly improved, and overall driving feeling more sure and steady. Glad to hear that the tires are as quiet as advertised. I currently have the Nankang Super Trippers (185/75 R16) on the original rims and they are nice and quiet but have NO traction in snow and don't last long if the alignment is not 100% correct. They are also 'C' class cargo tires, so I am running them at higher than recommended pressure now that summer is here and I'm sure that will also take it's toll. Really looking forward to more reports/photos... mine arrive in June!

Hi Justincase (Eric)
I've actually never had fat tyres on the car and only now after 90 000kms+ removed the original thin Russian tyres - but I do know what fat tyres can be like when you have no power steering!
In South Africa we hardly get any snow so there is very little opertunity for us to experience it and what snow we do get is nothing like the stuff that you are used to! The only way to really get traction in heavy snow is to fit some chains.
We basically use summer tyres all year round - I don't think you will actually be able to get any winter tyres over here. If I ever get the oppertunity to test the Nankang FT-7's in snow I will be sure to inform you.
I grew up in a tiny village near the Drakensberg and we used to get lots of snow over there and I do want to go there for a visit some day soon.
I drove in the snow with the original M+S tyres from Russia and they were fine even on a very icy road.
Are you still waiting for the Ft-7's to arrive? It would be very interesting to know how much you paid for the tyres?
Regards Marius

Hi Charles
I actually did not know that - thanks! I've been stopped a couple of times in road blocks etc but no complaints or fines so far?

Hi Ronnie
According to law you may only display the current disk. I hate it if I see a car with the expired disks still on. It just shows how lazy some people is.
My remoulds just says M+S> I think it is closer to a AT. Unless I get my hands on a regroover then it will turn into mud slingers!

Hi Charles
Re grovers are for truck tyres, You will ruin your tyres by using one. You would also have very serious problems with your insurance co if you have an accident. I am not even sure if it is legal to use them on truck tyres either.

Hi Ronnie
It isn't legal at all. What I want to do is legal. Just cut the outer thread into two so that mud will not stay stuck in the threads.

Hi Charles
I suggest you check, cutting a tyre will be illegal as you destroy the manufactures design and speed rating. I will ask my ex traffic cop when I see him. I also guarantee no Insurance co will Honor your claim if they notice it.

Hi Charles I would hate to see you ruin an expensive set of tyres . I must also say there is more to the design of a tyre to throw the mud out of the groves than meets the eye. I like Conti trac tyres as a good all round tyre, but the groves on them do not throw the mud out the way I would like. That is from my experience from the mud in Botswana. The tyres looked like slicks with no tread visible, and had no traction. Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
If they get clogged I will just have to give them a nice spin to get the mid out.

Hi Charles That did not work with the Conti Tracks , and when I had mud terrains on I never encountered mud. I got rid of the B F goodrich mud terrains before I slid into the back of anything on the wet roads with close to 3 ton of Landy. Ronnie

Sure thing Darryn - I will try my best as the Lada refuse to idle after a short (bumpy) trip.
You will probably be here around lunch time but I will speak to you laters.

Hi Marius, you probably need to check that the carb does not have a bit of dirt floating around. Have you checked the idle solenoid?
