Charles I just saw on an Ausie website that the FT-7's do come in 175/80R15 size for the 5" rim. Definitely not available here but not impossible to get.

Would an everyday commercial tyre like this be suitable for the Sidekick or other 15" Nivas? Marius Attachments:

Here are the specs - can anyone tell me what size would fit on the Sidekick's rims? I can get this tyre for around R700 - which is a pretty good price I think? There are other tyres like the FT-7 in the pipeline and even a more aggressive AT type for the 15" rim. First let me know what you guys think. Marius Attachments:

Hi Marius.
The sidekick use a 70series tyre and only the 205/70/15RC is available which is not a problem as I use a 205 tyre.
I think this tyre will be very good for someone uses his vehicle everyday to work and in town and very often ofroad. It will do good on dirt roads also.
Regards.

I think a 175 on the 15" rim would look fantastic. Marius that tyres should be fine. As most Nivas (mine included) will be running on tar or good gravel roads 90% of the time.
Im considering at a later stage building myself a town Niva. A 2wd one with something like a 2l opel engine and gearbox. Still has to look like a 4x4.

Thanks Hercules and Charles for the feedback I think I have seen Sidekicks with similar road pattern tyres so it should be ok for most road condtions. Charles I will certainly make an inquiry around the 175 for the Sidekick but it is a 175/80R15 - do you think it will fit ok? I do need to know from you guys ( I will email the rest of the gang soon) if this price (R700) is competitive though? Let me know. Marius

Sorry I forgot - the importers prices are excl VAT - so it will be closer to R750.

All new Sidekick which we released from the showrooms Y1999-2001 were with tyre size 195/80R15. Brand Kumho, especially imported from Korea for us. And they performed quite well.

Thanks Ventz for clearing that one for me So in fact the Sidekick rims are actually made for 80 series tyres - is that correct? Also according to Hercules the 70-75 series would also be a good fit? I will try to get the exact 195/80R15 size - but I can't promise anything. Load and speed ratings are normally around the 90S mark which should be more than fine. Regards Marius

We decided to go for 195/80R15 because it was closest to the original 16" tyre in outer diameter (If I remember correctly it was difference 1-2 mm OD which is nothing) and in this way to keep the transmission ratio the same and odometer and speedometer reading correct.
By this time it was the thiner possible 15" tyre to find. All mag wheels locally we found unsuitable and all Sidekick rims were imported from Germany.
Actually a lot of work has been done to find really the right one wheel and all contrary arguments bring the issue back to square one.
Recently I had a chance to compare a new 195/80R15 with a new 195/70R15 thinking they should be very close and I was surprised that the 195/70R15 was a lot bigger than the 195/80R15.

Hi Ventz
Thanks again for your very informative info with regard to a suitable tyre for the Sidekick. I will see what I can get and you are most welcome to comment on the tyres.

Rims dusted and ready. Do I need different wheel nuts when I fit the 16" steel wheels? Does anyone know.

I have no clue but the chrome ones might just do the job?
It is quite important that the nut is tapered properly at the bottom end though in order to grip the rim - but that goes without saying.

Hi Spikes
You must also make sure the thread inside lets the nut bottom fully on the steel rim. On the Landy the mag rim nuts do not hold the steel rims tight.

Thanks Ronnie @ Ari, which nuts did you use on the steel rims? The same as you now have on the Sidekick rims? Regards Spikes

Hi Spikes
Yes I used the same nuts as long as they are long enough it will be ok. You will feel though that it is hard to turn the nuts on all the way by hand as the unused part of the shaft may be slightly rusted and not have any wear on.

Hi all In alpabetical order: Darryn, Jannie (Juran's dad), Spikes and Ventz A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU GUYS - without you it would not have been possible to finally get my hands on a set of these tyres. They look great and they are tough with a solid sidewall. I am sure they will serve us well and I actually can't wait to test them in different conditions. Tomorrow I will be trading them for the Russian tyres after 90100 kms - they served me very well but I must say the arrival of these Nankang FT-7's are just in time ;D Finally I would like to give a special thanks to our importers they were amazing throughout this whole process. Yesterday I asked them around what time could I expect the tyres. The answer was "about lunchtime" - and exactly lunchtime it was! ;D Regards Marius Attachments:

Thanks Charles
I failed to mention Nankang tyres are actually environmentally friendly - the rubber compound they use is oil free.
So the more we drive around with our Nankangs- the more we save the environment ;D
