Hi Darryn
You are supposed to be able to take out and replace the intermediate shaft with the T/C in place. I struggled so much trying to replace it I now remove the T/C if I want the intermediate shaft out.

I pulled the box and tc in under a hour and a half on the grass with no jacks. Just managed to drop the tc on my cheast, hurt like hell. Besides that all is fine.

Only damage in the box is this The piece was lying in the bottom of the extension housing. You can see the marks where it was scratching the casing. My box was rebuild a couple of years ago by Ventz. Now i am tempted to leave the bearings and just repair 3rd gear. Maybe best would be to do all the bearings aswell. Do you think I can run with 5th like this? The bush between the output shaft bearing and the gear is badldy damaged. I think that is why when I torqued the output shaft nut the box went solid. Any advice guys? Charles

Hi Charles
I think not. I am surprised you can`t hear it as it meshes with the other gear.

Your time is right but you will battle puting it back without a trolly jack.

Hi Charles
I gather that you checked all the bearings and if they are running nice and smooth they should be fine. I would pay particular attention to the needle bearing and the small bearing at the end of the input shaft.
A good engineering shop should be able to repair the gear - it looks like a very clean break (and with no apparent damage to any other gears?). The job will have to be 100% perfect though.
Obviously a new one would be the best option but the fact that you had no noise from the gearbox it might even still do the job as it is - but I would rather replace it.
Please go buy one of those cheap trolley jacks before you do some serious damage to yourself. Someone I know was lucky to survive a after a tractor gearbox crushed his scull.

Hi Marius
The box was noisy but I do not know now if it was bearings or the piece of gear against the casing. Will replace the bearings aswell. Trying to get my hands on a new or good 2nd hand gear. Rather overhaul the whole box not than having to pull it again in a couple of months.

Hi Charles I agree with Marius on the bearings and jack. IF you do decide to have the gear rebuilt, use someone that is known in your trade to do a proper job. regards all Spikes

I took the box and TC out with brute force when I was young and foolish. I will have a trolley jack before I do it again. It sucks you're having to struggle like this Charles.

I know Darryn. Im use to do it at work with a gearbox jack on a lift. Then it is very easy. Will get a trolly jack before putting it back. First I have to find a 5th/reverse gear set. New one is very expensive.

Hi Charles
Perhaps Nikki can help you out - it will be much cheaper?
Apart from the 5th gear unit what else do you need?

Hi Marius
The biggest problem is the gear set. Have to strip the rest of the box. Too cold and windy today. I suspect the syncro spring for 3rd is broken but that is a minor thing. Want to go through all the bearings (all still russian bearing, Ventz did the box ten years ago) and replace anyone that doesnt feel perfect. Will replace the needle bearing aswell. The rear bush on the output shat is also shot and will need a new lock washer aswell.
Have replied to a add about a 124 box. The guy has 3 of them.
When I get to work next week I will phone some of the gearbox places to search for a new gear. A couple of them told me they have Niva box spares. I just cant afford a new gear.

Charles if you are looking for the bush that slides into 5th gear I can help you - but I suspect the bush you are referring to is the one behind the oil deflector?
Those Russian bearings are good quality - trust me ;D
Local prices for these parts are ridiculous - try and get it from the EU/UK/Russia you will save a fortune.

Hi Marius
Yes the bush behind the oil deflector. Lada part Uk quoted me £15 for the gear. Problem is I do not have a credit card. That means no paypay so I have to find some other way now to transfer the money.

Hi Charles
You could also find out if they will accept a western union or moneygram payment.
This you could do at any bidvest or standard bank.

Hi all
I am very tempted to just repair my 3rd gear check all the bearings ind runn witth the 5th/reverse gear as is for time being. I have a feeling the noise in the box wasnt the bearing, it was that piece of teeth getting scratched against the casing. Even though its broken I didnt have any extra noise in 5th. I will not use 5th that often in my Niva. Will be used mostly in town and a bit of dirt roads over the weekends. All the roads to Niva playgrounds is through urban areas so speed limits is 60km/h. On the dirt roads you cant even reach 100km/h in a new Nissan Patrol so I wouldnt try doing it in the Niva.
At what speed do you engage 5th? Even in 4th at 100km/h the revs doesnt seem that high.

Hi Charles
Providing I am not heavy on the loud pedal I am in 5th at 80. I think this is fine at low throttle openings. If you want to now go, drop a cog.

H Charles
I am not sure on this one as I have not stripped a niva gearbox yet. Looking at it I would think it only turns in 5 th. Marius should know as he has stripped one.

Hi guys
I striped my box fully today its jumping out of 3rd because the selctor forks are worn. Will have them welded up. Couple of the bearings is a bit noisy and my 5th gear is worn and the 5th/reverse is broken. The casing has a crack between the rear clustershaft and main shaft bearing housings. Will have that welded aswell. Also gave the casing a cleaning to within a inch of its life.
Will keep you posted.
Regards
Charles

Way to go, Charles! You have to box out. Do it properly and you will have no worries about the box. Did you find a reputable shop? Good luck Spikes

Will use a local guy to do the welding, its minor welds.
Going to get new gears. Could get a couple of boxes but all of them has a problem or two. If I overhaul my box myself I know its done properly. Going to import my own parts. The 5th/reverse is only 15 quid from Neil. My box has to be strong so I can tow Ari out of the dunes when his mud tyres dig into the Namib size dunes we have here where we are allowed to play on the beach.
