Well, perhaps there may be a photo, at last. This is as I bought the Niva from the internet, unseen, well I had a garage chap look at it in Valencia and he said 'it works'. I don't think he likes Ladas. Anyway, she was in a poor state having been in a shed for some years. Low mileage though and still with Russian tyres. The spare's unused. I'll take a pic soon in her current state and bore you all with the work I've done.

Yes, a very different looking front end. Looks in nice condition though. I'm looking forward to seeing more

And now some months later.... After some time in a barn, the rats had been at anything rubber, so new battery, all new coolant hoses and pipes from fluid reservoirs were fitted. All the brake hoses had perished, so a new set fitted. The clutch did'n't clear properly, so the gearbox was removed and the fault found was the centre plate rusty on the splines. A new clutch kit was fitted. While the 'box was out I replaced the input shaft seal. Also renewed was the clutch slave cyclinder. Had to be a bit careful taking the 'box out on my own! The timing chain shoe had broken (never seen this before-the bracket which the tensioner contacts had come away) and so I removed the front cover checked the chain and fitted new a pad, shoe and auto tensioner. Suddenly, the engine purred! Inside, I stripped everything out, cleaned everywhere and fitted sound deadening to the floor and bodysides. The tank unit was leaking so I replaced that too (over 100euros!). The seat trims were sound and the headlinning (no rats inside) so a thorough valet did the trick. The remote headlight adjusters had failed and so I removed the system and converted the lights to manual adjusters. Oh, I also fitted a warning light which comes on with the cooling fans - reassurance in the hot weather. Outside, new windscreen chromes and some paint shop work on dents to one door and the tailgate. A full 'T' Cut of the paintwork produced terrific results, followed by lots of polishing. Then finally, a major service. Well, in summary there we have it. Still things to do, for example centering the steering wheel and painting under the wheel arches and giving the engine a good clean before I refit the under body shields. Am I pleased with the results? Oh yes, its been good fun although sourcing the correct parts has been difficult at times. She looks good now and gets admiring glances. I have heard that wonderful saying ' well, you don't see many of those these days'. At this point many of you will smile, when I say she will not have to face green laneing, cross country runs or mud plugging. The occasional rambla (only when dry) yes, but otherwise strictly tarmac! It's always a pleasure to pop out in her. The other day, I said the one who must be obeyed, that I was nipping out for a run. 'Where to?' Said I 'Nowhere special just a drive out' Hope you are all still awake! Regards paulg
