Fugly, Bin Ladan, Ladi...whatever it is called, here he is. I bought it from someone in Port Alfred, who bought it from a member on the board. I had a 3 month trip coming up to Sodwana Bay (80km South of Mozambique), leaving from Port Elizabeth a few weeks after purchase. I had it road-worthied, and put in my name and did i few things before the trip: -Replaced radiator. Connected an electric fan to a switch inside the cabin (This came in handy for those 30 degree beach drives in -1st gear low range up sand dunes) -Fitted a back bumper -Fitted bull bar -Tinted the windows -Full service -Fitted a radio/CD/Mp3 player -Fitted a roof rack -Fitted carpeted packing board in the rear to help organise our stuff -Fitted spot lights which I connected to the hi beam switch. (Brights on = spots on) We made our way and all was going well, until after a long time of doing 110-120km/h the 5th gear cased out. I had it repaired at Chris Swales motors at a hefty R8300. In the time it was repaired, We had gotten a lift up to Sodwana and I came back down a week later to fetch it. I was going to sell it when I got back, but being such a capable vehicle I thought I may as well keep it and have fun. Its the type of car that if I bump/scratch it, I wouldn't mind . Before this I had a 330i and I can say I have had way more fun in this buggy than I did flooring the 330i.

Since I got back home, I have: Replaced the slave cylinder on the clutch (an easy 10 minute job)(Got the cylinder from Cape Parts PE for around R350) Replaced the master brake cylinder. Also not a bad job to do. I had smoke coming from the exhaust because brake fluid was leaking into the diaphragm/booster and getting sucked into the inlet manifold. Not good to say the least. Once I found this out I replaced the master cylinder (Cape Parts Port Elizabeth, R600 odd)and did an oil+filter change. I then made friends with Ari Bezuidenhout who hooked me up with a Bullbar and a Back bumper and some other goodies. Truly a wonderful family. Props to you guys! Bullbar before Headlight protectors bent and ready for welding Welded on. I then proceeded to take everything off a few days later, sand blast it, weld some angle iron into the bumper section of the Bullbar, spray it and refit

Back bumper fitted. I had the spare wheel mounted on it but I had some issues with it so I removed it. I will look at making a plan with it when I get some more patience haha. Also not my new wheels and tyres (Brand new second hand ) I must admit, the rim colour needs to change. Then again, so does the body. I will get to this once I sought out the rubbing issues. All in all I am happy. This will be a slow build, as I am on a budget and get paid weekly (Very Weakly, lol). I will continue to post as things go. For now, Happy rolling

A question: I want to skim the head for more low down torque. I read on the forum that 1.2mm is recommended. Where can I get a head gasket/top gasket set for this 1700? Midas/Autozone/Alert parts cant help me :/

Hi Dylan. Looks you had a great time and have great plans for your Niva. You can get a full gasket set from www.ladapower.com for around $30. They do sell the head gasket separetly but I am not sure of its price Tjeers Steve

Nice work so far. I like the headlight protectors, they remind me of the old defender bullbars

@conrad : Thanks!I bought a 6meter length of 6mm round bar for R20.00. Best 20 bucks I have spent in a long time! Charles: It has bought me many hours of fun (and frustration). I will continue to look after it. Thank you! I am planning a trip to brakkeduine in the next month or so. A minimum of 5 vehicles are needed for the sandy-terrained route. I have 2 other vehicles interested so far (plus Myself, so 3). If anyone else is interested, please send me a message.
