Welcome Wayne!
The weber carb seems quite popular. I will post a link for you a bit later on.
As for the 5th gear, if the gearbox casing is not broken, it will work out cheaper to replace the 5th gear cluster. There are very few 2nd hand gearboxes available

My problem is that my fuel consumption has shot up from roughly 11km/L to around 4km/L. I've checked the fuel line and cant find any leaks. When the engine is running there is a very strong petrol smell

When the engine is running there is a very strong petrol smell The petrol smell is most likely from vapour separator box located behind the side panel next to the right hand passenger side, BUT that would not be the cause of the heavy fuel consumption. The possible issues were discussed in the Technical section. Incorrect float level and choke not closing properly comes to mind.

Hi Wayne, welcome to the forum. cassieb has a gearbox for sale and I am sure Ari Bezuidenhout will also have a gearbox for sale soon. Parts for the 5th gearbox are available from Pavel in the Ukraine, look for his details in the spare parts supplier thread. Tjeers Steve

Hi Wayne.
Welcome to the Nivaesti.
I have seen several carb mods, and the Weber carbs are good. But I have also seen them in offroading situations and then the original Solex is better. More a horses for courses thing, I would imagine. That's just my observation.
Fortunately you know have access to a lot of technical experience in the threads of the forum and can find solutions to you problems.
Regards Spencer
