First of all, compliments on the great forum. It is extremely informative. My hilux was stolen about 10 days ago while I was out kayaking fishing off Amanzimtoti. 20kg giant kingfish by Mr Tmullet, on Flickr A couple of vehicles had gone missing recently. I could not risk further re distribution of wealth and decided to get a vehicle less appetising to our fellow un savoury country men. I looked at beach buggies, rebuilt jeeps, suzuki sj's, etc when I came across the Lada's. In my research I came across various opinions about these little vehicles. I managed to test a couple and settled on a neat, clean, niva 1.7i with 84000km on the clock. Lada at seller's place by Mr Tmullet, on Flickr The interior is in really good nick and the exterior too exept for 3 small rust spots that has been treated. Everything works exept the windscreen washer due to a broken washer reservoir (if anyone has a spare, please contact me). I took the vehicle to the local lada fundi for a check up and got slapped with a quote to replace clutch master and slave cylinders(stiff/tight clutch), service transfer box and intermediate prop(vibration when reaching 100km/h), renew air seperator (bad fuel smell after I filled the tank), and to check and fill the steering box with oil(steering quite stiff). 25% of what the vehicle cost me for the first major service... I will have to take a DIY approach if I want to keep this vehicle. The next items that need attention: replacement of front disks, flush cooling system, flush engine lubrication system. Seeing that I'm a kayak fisherman, I also urgently require roof racks. I have been advised not to fit cheap gutter fitted racks as these damage the gutters when loaded. If anyone has advive on roofracks, or decent roof racks for sale, please let me know.

Hi Tmullet, Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the compliment on the forum, we really appreciate it Which local lada expert did you take it to? If it was Ventz in Pietermaritzburg, then I would go with his opinion. For the windscreen resevoir, go to your local spares shop (Midas / Autozone) and get a generic one, the standard ones are rather large and prone to break. Stiff steering could be a result of tyre pressures, check them first, it appears, from your profile pic that you have the standard rims and tyres fitted. Check out this link for general maintenance and good advise to new owners: www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/NivaMainPage.htmAdditional Resources can be found here: www.ladaniva.co.uk/baxter/NivaMainPage.htmManuals can be downloaded here: locsa.atspace.com/technical.htmlThere are local replacements for the fornt disks available, check here: www.facebook.com/groups/LOCSA/#!/groups/LOCSA/files/ (copy and paste the entire link please, it for some reason wont link properly.) Jan ( ladanivabelgium) has a set of drawings for a roofrack, I cant find the link at the moment, but if you send him a PM he will get back to you. Please feel free to ask questions we are allways willing to help and give advise. Tjeers Steve

Ladaniva belgium lives in BELGIUM, you will need to make your own or take the drawings to someone who can make it for you.

Hi Tmullet, where are you situated? I am having a roofrack made based of Jan's drawings. Depending on how the final result is, I will give you the contact details for the person.
Cheers

Quick update. The master and slave was replaced as well as the pilot bearing. Upon inspection it was found that the clutch and thrust bearing is new and didn't need to be replaced. The flywheel needed to be skimmed though. The clutch is way better and easy to operate. The intermediate prop and universal was regreased and this made my lada slightly less vibey. Still some vibes between 105 and 115. The vapour separator was replaced with a steel unit but there are still fumes lingering. Could it take some time to disappear? Furthermore I replaced the throttle position sensor after Chris Swales diagnostic tool indicated that it was faulty. Easy job, expensive part, good result as the lada has way better acceleration without the flat spot. I still think the machine can do better in terms of power output and fuel consumption. The little Lada is on his first full tank and I will have my first accurate consumption figures by next week. Not looking good at the moment. I'm not sure that we'll get 300km from this first tank

Seems like you have the TBI model then?
The fuel smell is not good and neither is a steel vapour separator box. It should be non-ferrous metal/plastic

Might not be steel. What is a fuel tank made of? I'm sure it is made of the same material. Yes it is a 1.7tbi.

Might not be steel. What is a fuel tank made of? I'm sure it is made of the same material. Yes it is a 1.7tbi. The vapour separation tank is designed to collect fuel vapour, convert to droplets and return fuel drops to the tank. But I suppose the designer of the replacement tank took that into consideration. Glad to see another TBI up and running! Spikes

Dropbox is fine for linking files and but not for sharing images. Infact I have given up trying to get linked images from dropbox, I now use photobucket for images. Now, if only I could use something to share all your beer with me. Tjeers Steve

Even Flickr has its tricks Click on the "quote" icon just below the Subject line and paste the sharelink as above in. That gives you a nice frame around a single picture. If you have more pics, just paste the sharelinks below each other You are free to use FLICKR. It is only while patching the old attachments in that I am using Photobucket Flickr gives you way way more storage space that what PB does at present Spikes
