This thread is intended as a discussion around what would modifications you would do, if you were going to modify a Niva, and why?.
It is in no way intended to reopen the debate on wether or not to modify a Niva.
If you were to modify a Niva, what is, in your opinion, the single most important modification you would make and why?

My Niva has some mods, but the best by far is to increase hp and torque. And that's not because the TD conversion is my last mod. 7 years ago i had a TBI with 95 hp and 150 Nm torque. The top 3 on my own Niva would be: TD conversion Torssen diff Lift
my next project will probably be a power steering

Lift to get it looking right! After that a locker or LSD, depending on use, and quarterlights in the doors. It needs nothing else! (Other than a winch, underbody protection, alternator moved, rear seats out, roll cage fitted, spare inside, CB fitted, air intake re-positioned, rear bumper reinforced for recovery purposes, breathers fitted to diffs and boxes, panhard rod repositioned to accommodate lift and bigger shocks, mounts on cage for drive shaft, extinguisher and ground anchor, and probably a few other things!) Regards,

Because, in its standard location, it very quickly gets full of dirty water and choked with mud. I found, with the 1.6 Niva I had, that I was having to get alternators reconditioned three times a year! Which was ok and fairly cheap with those units but, the alti on mine was a different kettle of fish. The folks who reconditioned them quoted a totally different price and I decided to move it out of the way. It now lives at the top, left of the engine, and the same unit has been there for ten years, so I'm not complaining! lol! Regards,

I feel bad for even taking part in this. I love standard Nivas. So pure, unadulterated minimalist and utilitarian.
But if I were suggest mods, it would be:
Torsen diffs Transfer case/under body protection Snorkel and extended Diff breathers

I agree about the aesthetics and design – there's a reason that despite all the changes the current 2013 Niva still looks amazingly like the original.
BUTTTTT....
1a. If I was an engineer at Avtovaz doing the mods, by far the most important change would be to fit a larger fuel tank with baffles... TWICE as big would be just about right. This could be accomplished without sacrificing ground clearance by removing the current back exhaust and going to a straight pipe to the back of the car. Next, in order of importance, I would say move the alternator, make the recovery points more solid and add an extra beam in the back to make it easier to fit a trailer hitch. Oh, and nobody has mentioned a more robust front diff!
1b. If it couldn't be done at the factory and I was buying a NEW Niva, I would want all of the loom replaced with better quality wire, German relays and high quality sensors, and reintroduce (working!) oil-pressure and battery gauges.
Otherwise, after I've finished my sealed bearing mod next week and installed a torsen in the rear who-knows-when, my Niva will be ALMOST exactly as I want it!

Eric, I think your last statement hits the nail on the head. ALL Niva owners mod their Nivas to suit themselves and their individual needs, and we're ALL different. Someone once commented that my Niva fitted me like an old glove, and that was absolutely correct. It would not fit anyone else, which is why it'll never be for sale! Regards,
