Hello there, my name is Michael Fouché
I bought Damian's Lada on 21 February 2013, It's a 2001 1.7 carb in extremely good condition. I sold my Nissan 1400 bakkie about an hour before buying his Lada and i'm still glad about the swop till this day. So far I have done a trip to Silwerstroomstrand, and played a little on a friend's farm there
After the trip i added some stickers, had a freeflow exhaust fitted, did a tint to the 3 rear windows, still planning on doing the tint on the driver and passenger windows. We also removed some of the sound and added the sound from my nissan 1400 to the lada, basically kept the best for the lada and sold the rest.
After that we did a semi-long distance trip to Beaverlac with a Boswa:
I recorded all my fuel intake from the start and after this trip got a surprisingly bad economy, so bad we actually ran out of fuel before I even thought of refilling, luckily I spend some money at Makro and bought a jerry can, so after filling him with 10l we continued the trip and fueled up. the average economy was about 7km/l over 400km. I thought this could be due to the fuel cap not sealing tightly and after buying a rubber for R5 that fit perfectly I thought the fuel problem was solved.
I also took him to Atlantis dunes and had loads of fun, I did however struggled a little at one hill and I think i might have loaded too much stuff:
After this trip i started investigating and found the following:
-Only 1 valve from the double barrel carb opens, thus reducing much needed power.
-One of the fuel return pipes from the carb was in very bad condition and leaked fuel.
-Petrol dripping from the right side of the Lada close to where the fuel tank is.
The fuel dripping problem might be the biggest discovery yet, because as far as i could see quite a lot of fuel could be lost here. this could also be the fuel smell that Damian talked about on the forum. I'm planning on finding and solving the problem this weekend.
At the moment this is my fuel economy, do note i filled him up everytime, but i realised that the first click does not necessarily mean it's filled, so as jou can see where i have a bad economy it's usually before or after a good one:
158km 27.5l - Bought lada
220km 25.30l 8.7 km/l
170km 19.95l 8.52 km/l
241km 27.29l 8.84 km/l
236km 27.94l 8.45 km/l
210km 23.38l 8.98 km/l
56km 5.76l 9.75 km/l - Got freeflow here
234km 36.57l 6.4 km/l - Did long distance trip with Boswa
140km 20.33l 6.88 km/l
172km 16.90l 10.18 km/l
158km 19.67l 8.01 km/l
183km 20.41l 8.97 km/l
50km 4.34l 11.53 km/l
108km 18.71l 5.77 km/l - Went to Atlantis dunes
170km 19.64l 8.65 km/l
208km 22.19l 9.3 km/l
177km 20.39l 8.68 km/l - Last fillup, fixed leaking fuel pipe
So hopefully after finding and fixing the fuel dripping/smell problem the economy should go up significantly.
Ohja and the next thing we are planning is a 40-50mm lift since we scraped and hit stuff quite a lot in the dunes trip.
