Ahoy!
Im super new to this car and don't know much about them (hence my reason for joining the forum).. All i know is that they look cool! Im looking for a first car, Im still in school but will be shipped off to varsity next year in bloem. i don't have any idea what i should expect to pay for one but i would think a 2002 model would be great!
My parents are a bit against my idea of a lada - dad says they aren't very reliable and mom reckons that a 1.7l is too big... Any thoughts..?
Thanks!

The NIVAs generally available in South Africa all share the same body shells. You are most likely to find 1.7 Carb models for sale. Only about 500 1.7i were imported. 2 four door models were imported. Both are in Pretoria and not for sale. Have look on the website for the links for the history of NIVAs in South Africa. Baxters is also full of information .

Stuart, have a chat to Ventz, in PIetermaritzburg for a Niva or look in Gumtree. Niva's are as reliable as their previous owners maintenance allows them to be, the same as any 10 year old plus second hand car. You can get Ventz details in the spare parts suppliers threads. Odds are that any Nivas for sale in Gumtree in the Kzn area are known to Ventz.
You are unlikely to find anything less than a 1.7 as there are only very few 1600's around, I know of 1 in Pennington, 1 in the Southern Cape and 1 in Kimberley.
If your mom in concerned about power, tell her that a 1.4 citi golf is very likely to beat you from robot to robot and has a higher top speed.
Tjeers
