Hi Conrad
lokks as if you enjoyed yourself. If you are going to be in water a lot consider fitting sealed beam headlights. Unfortunately the light output is inferior but at least you will not ruin your lights.

Ronnie I have seen sealed beam headlights with better light output than semi sealed beams.
Conrad great pics. Looks like a lot of fun. did you get any water in where your steering enters the cabin?

Hi Charles
I would be interested to know what make of sealed beam is better as I have just replaced the ones on the MG with semi sealed. I checked the Lumen's of both and they were exactly the same and yet the semi sealed light the road by far the best.

Thanks Ronnie, I enjoyed everything except the lack of power steering. After two days of heavy off-road driving my shoulders were not my friends anymore.
As far as water crossing go, I'm not planning to go as deep as we did there again. I'm too scared of rust! Seeing the water pouring out the drain holes in the door sills is still giving me nightmares.
Charles the only place the water came in was a slight leak from the passenger door seal. It wasn't a lot, maybe only a tablespoon full at most.

Nice, you get used to stripping the lights to drain them.
Did the organizers etc have any comments on the lada, your tyres etc??

I was asked how good the tyres were and I can honestly say they have performed really well in all conditions. I'm very pleased with them.
Everyone was very impressed with the lada and how capable it was inspite of the fact that it didn't have a rear difflock.
There was only one obstacle that I didnt do, and that was a steep incline that you had to stop half way up and then pull away again. I just would have stalled due to the lack of power. It must be nice having a big auto diesel, they just idled up the steep stuff.

HI Conrad.
Was it worth doing the training? Do you feel more capable now?
Most of what I know about offroading was gained via experience and i have wondered what benefit could be had from formal training courses.
I'm happy the tyres worked well.
Regards Spencer

Hi Conrad
I don`t think I ever had the Niva through deep water, but I went through water in the Landy that did not look deep but was well over the bottom of the doors. Unfortunately once you enter you are committed and this was a long crossing. Checking first does not appeal to me when there are Crocs about. Apart from that episode I try to keep clear of deep water.

Hi Spencer, the training was definitely worth it in my opinion. There were lots of tips that we were taught that I have not heard or read before.
A good example is to set your mirrors so that you can see your rear wheels. That way you can check that they are following the correct path and you can monitor whether they are spinning or not. When you think about it afterwards it sounds obvious, but its not something I would have thought of on my own.
John, the owner is incredibly knowledgeable, and there wasn't a single question he couldn't answer. He knew everything from the mechanical side of things, to the technicalities of driving off road, preparing for overlanding, even the strange customs in some the African countries that could get you into trouble as a tourist.
