Hi all The trip options are looking very good. Thanks Ronnie, great work! Personally, I'd be quite happy to stick to SWA for the whole trip. There is enough to see and experience there to keep one busy for quite a while Example: Do a search on "Khauxa!nas" or any links on (the late)Klaus Dierks' work is SWA Regards Spikes

Hi Ronnie
Great work.
I will be back in Pretoria (and internet) by next weekend and then be more active.
I have a few Zim friends at varsity and they live in the north so I'll ask them about the area. I've already heard from them that they travel up thru Botswana and then enter Zim at the northwestern corner so I can alway ask them for a less travelled, quiet route.
They have also said that the security is not bad and about the same as SA.

Hi Spikes and Hercules I have no problem with Namibia except for distance in a 2 week period. Also I am trying to take into account where people live. It is pointless arriving back in Pretoria on for example the Sunday when Danie and spikes need to be at work on the Monday and they still have 700km to go to get home. Also cost wise half way through the Caprive is 2700km from Durban and Nelspruit must be similar. By the time you take the trip home into account, we have already done 5400kms and we have done nothing, and have used up 4 days of the trip just to get there, It does not make sense. Also it is over R5000 for fuel for 5400km. There are also Ladies to take into account so there has got to be acceptable Ablution facilities of some kind available where ever we go, and the Caprive reserves are extremely rustic. The cheap interesting route through Botswana is via the salt pans to spend a night at Kubu island. There is only long drops there, nothing else, but the next day we would overnight at a place with all the amenities. We CAN design a good tour at reasonable cost . Can I assume there will be 2 people per vehicle ?. If any one who has been to these areas has any information please share it with us as even though I travelled extensively in the past it was a while ago and things change rapidly. Regards Ronnie

Hi all Here is another route for you to look at. I have put in costs that are in general accurate. I know a lot of the members are worried about Zim so perhaps Goose can give his opinion. I have no problem going there and would take the same precautions as in this country. I will do another trip including Zim to either Chizarira national park or Matusadona park which is on Lake Kariba. This is more distance as wanted by the members. After that I will try to do a trip taking in the North of Namibia Regards Ronnie Attachments:

Hi All A couple of weeks ago I gave you another route to look at. It has costs as well as distance. You can ignore the destinations as they don`t matter at this stage, but give me some indication if distance and costs are acceptable. The cost is very important as we do not want anyone being excluded because of this. The zim parks are attractive because of the rate structure when traveling in a group as the camping is based on a camp site for 6 people for a week of USD75. or USD12.50pppd If you all study this it should take your mind off other things ;D

Hi Ronnie
Zim is good for me. What fuel economy did you use for the fuel and cost calculations. Also fuel has a different price in Zim and Bot.

Hi Ari and all
Used the current SA price, 11L/100km.Should be ok as we will not be doing 140kph ;D The Landy will use about 13 or 14.

Hi Ronnie
Zim would be fine and the cost is affordable.
Today I have had a look at a recent trip report about a trip to Botswana, and the costs to visit some of the parks are insane.

Hi Marius Yes I will use the Landy. I cannot afford to kit out the Lada for one trip. I spent a fortune on the Landy and used it for 12 years. Regards Ronnie

Hi Danie and all
When I get my next 1 gig I will do one more to Zim taking in Lake Kariba and one wild park at Kariba. After that I will tackle Namibia as I think the parks there are affordable. Pity about Botswana as it is the wildest.

Hi Ronnie I know what you've done so far has involved a lot of work and time but... If we are going to do Zim alone (which is very much fine with me) why don't we do a circle route from Beitbridge to Beitbridge? I also know that you despise that crossing. Something like Matobo/Hwange/Vic/Kariba/Mana/Harare/Masvingo and back to Beitbridge We can even go further east in the direction of Motare. I also remember when we were at Kariba/Sinyati there was a 4x4 route/track all the way along Kariba (not on any map I have) from Hwange to Kariba Village. I will have to find out though? If you don't like it - kill it Regards Marius

Hi Marius and Ari I can`t do much now till the start of the month as I have used my 1 gig and had to buy some data to last me to the end of the month. . I do not like Beitbridge and it will be worse trying to get 7 or 8 vehicles through. Marius the road you are talking about is on a lot of maps and is on the gps on Tracks 4 Africa. It is a very rough road but I intend looking at it next. I will need to check what border posts to Moz are in the south of Zim. Regards Ronnie

Hi all Ari's suggestion has merit but could be better in reverse. KZN members can hit Moz at Ponta d Ouro GP and MP members can meet KZN group in Moz all up towards Beira then turn west to cross into Zim at Mutare travel Zim and return either via Bots or try Beit Bridge Regrads Spikes

Hi
Looking at a map it would be possible to go up thru Moz, cut across Mal, into Zam and down thru Zim +- 6000km.
Ronnie at the moment we are just creating work for you , to keep you out of mischief.

Hi Ari
I don`t mind the work, but it takes a lot of time to try and find costs. I will look at Zim and Moz next as it seems to be popular. I want to limit Border crossings due to costs and the time it takes to complete the formalities. If it is slow and we have say 16 people a crossing could take 5 Hrs. Remember we are looking at 2 years in front so we don`t know what costs will be then. We must always have plan B in case Zim has problems as they are due an election before then.
Regards
