Hi Danie
I think about 5000Km max. It is not practical to go much less. I would not take you where it is not safe. At the same time this is untamed Africa. As long as you don`t let your wife read this we have been seriously charged by Elephants, Been in an enclosure with 5 cheetah(did not know they were there) and had 2 black guys with AK47`S thumbing a lift on the way to Chipinda Pools. Now they are good stories for round the camp fire. ;D
Regards
Ronnie

Hi All
I have read some of the posts on th above mentioned websites, and I think we all have to think long and hard before we made a final desission - Botswana / Namibia , or Zim / Moz.
Please do not hessitate to air your views.

Hi All.
I think 5000km sounds fine. I also think Zim is safer then herein SA. Lots to talk about and I start feeling like a youngster with a new tow.

Hi All
I agree there is a lot to think about. I have been trying to digest the horrendous price increases in Zim and Bots. As far as i can see Namibia is probably the cheapest now. I will spend some time researching a route using Caprive area as the main focus. I have a cheap route through Botswana, via Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Kubu Island ( in the middle of the Salt pans) returning to the Maun Nata road and staying at Planet Baobab to wash off the dust of the salt pans. It is then only 3 hours to Kasane in the north. Hercules we will do every thing we can to make you feel young again ;D

Hi Ronnie I think Botswana is definately one of the safest countries in Africa, and Namibia is probably safer than South Africa.
I am not a "bang gat", but I must admit - I am not so sure about Moz and Zim. This should obviously be discussed, as I am sure nobody will be prepared to put their family's safety at risk.

I think the Northern part of Moz can be quite dangerous - but I'm just guessing here. I also believe that when traveling in a group - and sticking to some basic rules - can minimize your chances becoming victims of crime.
Perhaps I'm overextending this thing a little - but Zambia (the Southern Region) could also be a possibility. Net 'n klip in die bos.
A quick translation for Ronnie " Just a rock in the bush" ;D

Hi Marius
Thanks for the translation ;D. From Jhb you can do South of Zambia and keep to 5000Km. I think to see much you would need to head towards Kariba dam. Suits me never seen it. Will look at maps to see distance involved. Victoria Falls also available from Zambia for those who have never seen it.(and for those who have)
Regards
Ronnie
PS Zambian border +- 1300km from Jhb.

Hi Marius Yes I would like to see kariba dam and village.I believe the village is be one of the hottest places on the planet ;D. I had booked the Landy on the ferry and had booked Mana Pools a number of years ago , but due to the Dictator next door there was no customers and the ferry was taken out of the water . Result, trip cancelled, went to Botswana instead. Regards Ronnie PS looking forward to this trip hope every body can make it.

Hi Ronnie Kariba village is the most laid back place on earth! It took the best part of two days and many beers just to get a battery hooked up on a power boat to take us to Senyati. Fantastic memories though Above reason cost us our trip to Mana Pools - would be fantastic if we can go there!

Hi Marius
Always wanted to go to Mana Pools, a World Heritage Site. I think there will be resistance to Zim. You can do the Zambian side of the Zambezi and go through customs and over the dam wall and spend some time in Kariba village (walking to save the carbon tax etc). The same with Vic Falls, if every body wants to go there we base in Kasane and pay a Tour co to take us for a day trip. Otherwise every vehicle has to pay all the taxes and insurance. Nice to know some one else has been to these places ;D.
regards
Ronnie

My daughter is a qualified ICU registered nurse (sister) , and while my son in law will be joining the trip, I guess my daughter will join as well. (Haven't asked her yet.)
If she joins, we will have somebody on board who could give some sort of medical assistance, if really needed.

Hi Danie
Very handy to have our own registered nurse ;D. Must admit we have not taken anything for Malaria for many years always found the tablets caused constipation etc. Still very careful, and keep well covered at night and use plenty of insect repellent. June July dry season so not so many mosquito's around. Glad to see so much interest in this trip. I am going next weekend to see Danie so please give us some idea what you want to do and see. 5000Km lets you go as far as parts of Zambia and Namibia so there is plenty of places to visit.
Regards

Hi All
Here is a list of some items which I think are a must have in each vehicle. 1) Fire extinguisher 2)40 liters extra petrol minimum 3)20 liters drinking water minimum 4)Pump (electric or hand)to re inflate tyres.(This is a must for all as it is not feasible to share. It can take 20 minutes with the average electric pump to raise 4 tyres from 1.4 bar to 3 bar. 5) seed net for radiator (I have never needed it but one never knows) 6)Good torch and spare batteries 7)Spade 8)Tow rope 9)High lift jack (can be shared) 10)Tubeless tyre repair kit I will add to this as i remember critical items. If you intend to take meat you will need a fridge/freezer, they are expensive +R5000. You then need a large battery or 2 batteries and split charge system. You can justify the expensive items providing this trip is not a one off. Hope fully this will not be the case and you will continue with this kind of Holiday.
Regards
Ronnie

Hi Ronnie
Somebody passed a few comments about meat at another forum (SA 4 X 4 Community forum I think it was ) - he recons meat are cheaper in Botswana than in SA, the quality are excellent, and it could be bought from shops like Shoprite all over the country.
So if we travel via Botswana, it might be better to buy meat across the border.
Regards
Danie
P.s. Thanks for the list of items needed.
I think toolbox with a full set of spanners is also important. At least 2 x tyre levers as well.

Hi Danie Meat is available in Botswana in the Major towns, but we have always had quality problems. When heading North to Central Kalahari etc the only meat I know of is at the small Butcher in Rakops. The only meat I would buy there is Fillet and T bone and the last time we were there they had none. .There is meat in Serowe and Palapye but I don`t remember seeing meat I would buy. They cater for the local population. You will get in Kasane and Maun but both are in the north. As I said before, this is Africa and things change from one visit to another.Their meat is cheap .
