Hey all.
So my Lada 1.7 engine gave me some troubles. To be exact the 4 piston burned. So I decided to install a 4Y engine, similar to what Douw did with his Niva after getting the inspiration from his thread.
The difference is that I am aiming to keep my Lada 4x4. The transplant is not finished yet, but if all goes well it should be finished during this week.

My aim is to use the Lada gearbox, but to do so we had to modify a Toyota bellhousing to fit on the Lada box.

Thanks Spikes. The only thing I'm worried about is the clearance above the front diff. But I should know the result of that today.

Hi Stephen
I really do hope so.
Had to send the modified bellhousing back to the engineers today so that they can skim it a bit.
Also replacing the mechanical fan with a 12'' electrical fan.

So yesterday the engine got placed into the engine bay for the first time. But the sump is not clearing the diff. Today the mechanic will turn the sump around and see if it will clear it then. Judging with the eye, it looks like it should clear the diff enough then, but we will only really know as soon as it has been done.

Riaan the guys with the 4y engines in the hiluxes put 1800 Vw golf carbs on those engines to get them lighter on fuel. Just has to be a genuine carb.

That route would solve the front diff clearance, I take it?

Oil is contained in separate tank NOT attached to engine normally uses electrically driven external oil pump although some engines use an external engine driven oil pump, lots of extra plumbing required but can work wonders in cooling engine internal temperatures.

Dry sumps can be very simple with only a few hoses, the last thing NIvas need is added complexity.

I'm also looking forward to seeing your car finished. Maybe we can use that as an excuse for another KZN get together?

You mean you need an excuse for a get together? What happened to the regular Saturday gatherings at that pub?
Hardly a weekend goes by that I don't see another Niva owner

Conrad, I think a get together before the end of the year is a great idea. As soon as my Niva is back on the road we can start to plan it.
