Anyone knows what is the best way to keep them away from your house?
Lady who works with me is retiring end of the year. They are having a house built on a plot out of town . It is a completely undeveloped area.
Anyone knows what to use as repellent that does not leave marks or smells?
Regards

Dankie Spikes.
SJ if it was me I would do that. We still want to get Ferrets and Chinchillas someday. Currently we have 4 rats.

Hi Gav
Snakes are very common over here - esp where I live! You don't see them that often though as they tend to move away from what they perceive as a threat.
About a year ago I had to kill a dangerous one that made its way into the house.
Dangerous snakes love rats so I can advise Charles to get rid of them for starters ;D
I hate mowing the lawn, but it is good to keep the grass and bushes around the house at bay and we have a cat that is a prolific hunter! He is killing everything - even with a bell around his neck. Just tonight I had to rescue a gecko that was promptly delivered at my feet during dinner!
Fortunately we also have a lot of natural snake eaters around.

Hi Gav.
Here not so much as we are very close to the sea. I work a bit more inland and we often get snakes at work in summer. Mostly we get Puff adders.
Where I grew up we would get Cobras in the garden very often in summer.

Chances of getting struck by a snake is in reality quite rare. In 40 years in the Forestry industry there has been 2 recorded and verified case of snake bite.
I have had several close shaves with Mozambique Spitting Cobra's. They are plentiful in the Lowveld.
Keep the old Lady's yard clean and avoid garden attrations that will allow rats/mice and frogs to breed. Make sure the outside doors are close fitting at ground level. Spread or spray the Condies and she should be OK

Hi Marius
When we lived on the plot near Meyerton we had problems with Rinkals for 20 years. The more I killed them the more would appear. The most effective weapon I had was the ride on lawn more. They were like mincers and chopped them into small pieces. The strange thing is we had no scorpion`s until we moved to the house in Florida Glen in Roodepoort and I saw a few there. Like Gav I hate snakes.

Hi Ronnie
If I had a ride on I would probably be more keen to cut the lawn more frequently. Must have been a funny sight (not for you) to see you go chasing after Rinkals with your lawnmower! ;D
Marius PS - Rinkals have an enormous amount of offspring!

Hi Marius
I was a dab hand at shooting them with my 38 special. I was shooting them for nearly 20 years and there was as many then as when I started. The lawnmower was the best as there was nothing to get rid of as they were mince meat. It was a pity to have to shoot wildlife, but I made an exception of snakes.

We used to get fer de lance snakes in British Honduras (now Belize), but I only ever saw one. That had coiled itself round the back axle of the Willys, and my dad shot it with the shotgun. Demolished the axle as well! I did once try to pick up a stick to hit my sister with, only to watch it wriggle away! They tend to get out the way when they feel you walking along, just as the Jaguars stay away from humans. The only one that came to the house got punched on the nose by my mother as it looked through a window - never came back! We did always shake out shoes and boots before putting them on though! Regards,

Hi John
I see you are also well traveled ;D. The big problem with snakes unless you are very sure what kind it is you don`t know wither they are harmless or not. In Pennington in SA we had plenty of BAD ones like the black and green mamba.

Born and bred out there! Or, more accurately, between Belize, Trinidad and Dominica. In Dominica we only had boas, no problem with them, but Belize had a myriad of creatures! Always surprised that I had no problems considering shorts and mostly barefoot (which is why I have to have wide fitting shoes!!) Still got the accent too, when necessary! Regards,

Cats and dogs like Jackrussels are real good snake repellants. But you get something, it's called Snake Away if I remember correct that you can spray around your house that apparently works well. Each year here in Amanzimtoti I get snakes in my security door at least once a year. Found 4 coiled through the railings the other day when I got home. Caught them with the braaitongs and just chucked them back into the bushes.

SJ, I know the Moz Spitting Cobra's well from my days living in Komatipoort. Luckily I have never been bitten or spat on by one of those snakes. But they are real arrogant little creatures.
