The TD is performing brilliant, but i was experiencing some cooling problems. At high speed (115 + kph) temp rised more then i wanted. I will copy/paste some of the discussion on the UK forum. The topic is started by a guy who also put a 1.9 TD in his Niva and had some cooling problems some copy/paste: bottom line is that most of my 'cooling problems' were caused by faulty gauges and sensors the discussion can be found here: www.lada.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=10203&start=75

outside temperature reaches 25°C now. At the highway at 100-110 kph first fan is kicking in, keeping coolant temp at +- 85°C. Oil temp is going well over 100°C in daily traffic. I must wait for funds, but i will install an oil cooler to keep oil temp down. Other then that, i believe intake air is getting way too hot. Hard accelerating with turbo pushing hard translates immediately in rising water temp. I must install an intercooler, but same story here: funds water temp didn't go over 95°C (yet), the fans are working overtime, but they do keep the temp at the safe side

It's always good to hear that a conversion was successful, there are so often sad stories of endless problems.

i'm keeping a close eye on all the temperatures and pressures. I have a STACK water- and oil temperature gauge and in the very near future i will also buy an oil- and turbo pressure gauge. Both will be mecanical because you always get a correct reading then I'm fabricating the dash for the extra 2 gauges now.
An oil cooler kit for a peugeot 306 TD (same engine as mine) will be ordered in the UK, as those things are a lot cheaper there then in Belgium. The turbo is pushing my oil temp sky high, i want it at 80-90°C.

i removed the heater controls because i don't use them at all and put some gauges and switches there. Just took a piece of aluminum and drilled and bended untill i liked it after painting the lot must be installed in my Niva, slightly angled to me for an accurate reading: i now have: water temp gauge oil temp gauge volt gauge oil prssure gauge turbo pressure gauge next TD related purchase will be an oil cooler

Confused(nothing unusual for me ) How come the turbo boost registers and all the others are at zero?

turbo boost isn't registering. It sits at zero, but scale is from -1 till +2

Negative boost, now you really have me totally confused. Need a stiff shot of Red Heart or Stroh rum. Quickly too Did required reading..fine now understand that it will show vacuum at idle

spikes, that's only the case with a petrol engine. Diesel has no vacuum.
I come to the conclusion that mechanical gauges are way more accurate then electric gauges. Electric gauges depend on the cars on board voltage, wat can range from 12V to 14.4 V. The lower the voltage, the lower the reading on electric temperature and pressure gauges. Turbo boost and oil pressure are mechanical

i added a 115°C warning light (boiling point, system under pressure) and a 'fans on' light. It works with both the manual switch and the thermo switch. it's just to keep me alerted

my findings so far: The Td is performing exellent. Water temperature rises when hitting it hard, but it stays at the safe side. Oil temperature rises at high revs on the highway. Both of these issues will be resolved when i mount an oil cooler. I don't worry too much about that. Intake air is getting way too hot when pushing the turbo hard, asking for constant boost. You can actually feel a drop of power after a short period of time. An intercooler will take care of that. Diesel consuming: an average of 10 liter on 100 km. Seems a lot for a diesel, but my previous engine needed the same since the roof rack with spots and spare wheel on top of it. And this engine gives me a lot more fun First i want all temperatures where i want them when pushing hard. Once that is achieved, i will alter turbo pressure and the fuel pump. These engines can EASY be pushed till 130-150 hp with stock turbo and pump and still be reliable. It's not the pure power i'm after, but i got addicted to the torque and turbo push

some new data about consumption: when i drive 'normaly' without asking to much power (say shifting at 2000-2500 revs with little throttle) consumption is significantly lower. Last week i managed to get 7,2 liter/100 km.

destroyed my gearbox yesterday. Had the turbo pressure up to 1,4 bar (20 psi). Pulled like hell, even in 'normal car' terms, but gearbox not very happy with it. Will open the gear box today

not a difficult diagnose conrad, yes, the boost will be turned back to 1,1 bar (16 psi)

"It's not the pure power i'm after, but i got addicted to the torque and turbo push" Sad to see that the gearbox had to pack up. Did the low diff ratios also contribute? On the bright side, you have far better (shorter) access to spares than us.

i have most (almost anyting) gear box parts on stock. The diff ratios may have something to do with it, but i'm convinced that the 17i (11/43) diffs won't survive the turbo torque. 1600 diffs are much stronger. My gear box is already back together. I replaced the intermediate shaft and the input shaft with the 4th gear on it. I also replaced all bearings. They were only 30 000 km old, but they didn't come from pavel and there was some wear visible. Now i've put pavel's bearings in it.

And yes those diffs on the std 1600 made it just that bit more competent in low range in difficult situations, compared to the stock 1.7s
