Hey Jan,
Great stuff!
I really envy you have all that time to keep your hobby running.
Currently I have at my place 17 Ladas - including the only one SAMARA in South Africa and one LHS steering NIVA 1600 which I bought from the Belgian embassy and I'm so embarrassed the majority of them will never have a chance to get better life. Just for a lack of time.

spikes, i realy don't have so much time. I took a week of from work for this. last weekend i told everybody to leave me alone so i could do the swap. I didn't tell them why or everybody would come take a look and drink my beer. Don't care about that, but then all this work would not have been done. I even didn't post it on our own forum untill last night. All these years all other niva's came before mine. Not this week!

first test drive last night: my son was filming with my crappy old cell he's sitting not in front of the gauges, you should ad 10 km to what you see. I stopped accelerating at 120 km/u. Top is not that much higher. I think 130 or so. Don't mind the temp gauge, it's not working, i use an after marked VDO gauge for that first and second gear are too short for a turbo engine in full acceleration. When boost is fully there, you need to shift gears. But from 3th gear on it's party time! I'm convinced that a 17i MPI stands no chance at all. All pleasant and well, but you don't drive a car like that in every day use. It's the driveability that improved a lot. Pulling away from 50 in 4th for instance: floor the pedal, wait 1 sec or so for boost and the bloody thing pulls like a mad man (again in Niva terms ). Shifting gears at 3000 revs on half throttle makes the car very comfortable to drive, floating along with modern day traffic. I'm very pleased with the results so far. later this summer an intercooler will be mounted, and turbo boost will be increased. How much did it cost so far? i bought the Citroën Xantia donor car cheap. The parts i sold from it pay for the engine. i replaced prior to the build in: - timing belt + idlers - water pump - gaskets and seals - glow sparks this week i bought: - the (blue) turbo hoses (these suckers are VERY expensive, what you see on the pics is 300 euros worth) - aluminum pipes for 150 euros worth (again: VERY expensive, mainly because they have a special design at the ends so the hoses can't come of) - a big fat SACHS clutch kit. Never felt a Niva clutch pedal this light to operate - bits and pieces, this and thats - oil, filters and coolant - exhaust pipe to fabricate a new down pipe. The new down pipe is 50 mm, any larger is impossible to get down to the car because the front diff supports are sitting in the way. 50mm will do..The down pipe is bolted to the first silincer. later i will remove the rest of the original exhaust and will build a new one from the downpipe on. I will use only one silincer then. Fabricating the downpipe was a pain, i will rebuild it again because it's not up to my standards yet. Lack of time prevents me to do this now. Adding this all up the total sum is 1000-1200 euros. I began with the swap monday morning, worked 12-14 hours a day and last night was the first test drive. It took this long because although the engine fiitted to the gear box and engine mounts, ALL other stuff had to be altered or fabricated. Am i happy with the result? hell yes! Do i regret anything? yes, that i didn't build it in 2 years ago

Hi Jan Thanks for detailed info on the rebuild. Where will you be fitting the inter-cooler(eventually)? And out of complete curiosity, how much paperwork do you have to do to get the new engine and chassis combination registered and legal. Here it is quite a rigmarole especially if one of the cars had been scrapped Next week you will spend more time on customers cars before the Club outing to France... better get all your conversion work done this weekend...........

Spikes, no paperwork... it's IMPOSSIBLE in Belgium to get this car legally on the road. Belgium is one of those countrys where you may not alter your vehicule, if not the most impossible. I'll just have to drive it on 1.9D paperwork.
I will post a picture of the IC mock up later this weekend. I'll be using a Renault 5 GT turbo IC.

as i said before i will be using a Renault 5 GT turbo IC. It's small and thick and will hopefully do the job. Mock-up with an old IC: how i will build it: Possibly i will mount a little fan on the IC for being able to provide a cold air flow when offroading at low speed. The hood will be altered so a sufficient air flow is guaranteed

Thanks Jan
I think the fan will be required unless you fit the IC as on the Nissan Terrano where it sits in direct airflow almost above the bonnet

Adding this all up the total sum is 1000-1200 euros. You forgot to add the €200 for beer while planning/thinking about doing it! Congratulations. Those are about the best performance numbers I've heard for a diesel Niva. You should be set for a brilliant summer, Jan.

very strange things happened last friday. I went to the store to get some food and 'other stuff' for the France trip. I pulled away after stopping at a traffic light and suddenly the engine stalled making a terrible rattling noise. The timing belt was not broken so i assumed i had fuel pump problems. The niva was towed home and left there. We went to France with my sons Niva. Monday i opened the engine to check the timing belt timing. It was 2 teeth off I adjusted the belt and the engine is running fine now. Problem is that i can't find a reason why this happened. I read on the internet that sometimes the camshaft jammes in it's bearings due to a lack of oil pressure or to little oil in the sump. None of this is the case. I must find the reason, but i'm afraid i'll just have to drive it untill it happens again, or not...
