Since a few people asked for it i will post some comments and pictures of the restauration of my sons Clio 1.8 16V here. I know very well this is not Niva related, so if the mods feel this is not the right place for this, please let me know

Not a problem Jan. We can always remove it at some later stage if needed.

This is the Clio i am talking about. My son bought it from a color blind person i think ;D The first 2 pictures were taken at the sellers house at the time we bought the car Plans are: - overhaull an engine and make it 2.0 L instead of 1.8 L. The engine is almost ready, it's just waiting for a timing belt kit and a waterpump. The new engine should have +- 165 HP and 200 Nm of torque - Get all the dents out and make it rust free. The removable body parts should be in filler coating by this evening. - paint it in Renault Sport Jaune color. See picture below for the color. Plan is to paint it early next week Tonight or tomorrow morning i will add more pictures, also of the way how we prepare the body for paint the 'old skool' way. The Clio will be used as show car on meetings, so it must be as perfect as possible. BTW: my son has seen the light: his daily is een 1.7 Niva This is also a bit of a project for me. See if i still got it to build a street race engine and gear box (GB at a later stage) for this gocart

some work we did some time ago: new front brake pads and discs stainless steel exhaust My son found some body parts with very little rust and damage. Still, they are 20 years old, so some work had to been done How the car is now, sitting in Niva country ;D: We've put some old doors in it because it's raining here. As long as the body parts are in the garage, the car must stay outside the body parts we're working on now preparing a door for primer: old skool: after primer some black paint. While whet sanding you can very clearly see the litlle faults that may still be there. The black paint will still be sitting in very little dents and scratches final primer coating, must be sanded down with weth paper 800 or 1000 once more before paint. The primer can be sprayed at home. Little dust particles can be sanded away. For the final paint coating we will be renting a paint boot. I will be painting the Clio myself, hope it works out. it's a few years ago i painted a complete car. Pictures of the rebuild engine will follow later. I can't get to it now because of all the body parts in my small garage

Hi All
For members who have not painted before what Jan is doing is to put a mist coat of black over the primer, then using a sanding block with the wet / dry paper sand over it and any imperfections will remain showing black.

Hi Jan
What type of paint are you using. Is it cellulose (Duco) or 2 pack ?. I have not used 2 pack and am not sure if the masks I have would be sufficient for it.

Thanks Jan. Cellulose is banned here but you are still allowed to use it if you have a Historical vehicle. Ronnie

here even 2K is banned. You have to get a certificat that states that the car is old and that 2K is required for it. All body shops use water based paint now. This is for invironmental reasons, but then you need to apply a clear coat and the clear coat is still solvent based , while with plain 2K you don't even need a clear coat (if the paint is not metallic) I'm probably to stupid to understand this

Hi Jan
The regulations in the EU are all strange. I have not painted a car for a long time so I am out of touch.

I wil stay in sunny sa Turbo would be great on that car. But 160+hp 200nm is more than sufficient for a small car like that. Are u going to use it for track days? Throttle bodys flow and cam made my vw 16v run like hell if u go that route u wont need a turbo but it sucks fuel.

In time the cams will be replaced by 286° cams, but my son first has to drive it like it is. He's not used to a lot of horse power and a 190-200 hp engine would be to much at this point. Besides, those cams are not user friendly, as torque will only kick in at +4500 revs till 8000 revs. First this engine has to get some km's so it's broken in. I would love to put a set of trottle body's on this engine, but that's also not alowed here. In fact, it's not alowed to raise the hp at all, so all modifications must be hidden ones (more cc, cams, compression ratio etc) We spend almost 2 days working on the bumpers It will be a show car, so they must be perfect, but plastic bumpers seem to get a lot of small damages in +20 years time. I'll try to post some pictures tonight

Ai Jan. They dont let u have any fun there. 276 cams is the max in a 16v that has to drive on the road. I had 276 on my 16v and i could not get it to run nicely under 2500 revs. Took them out and fitted sissy 268 deg cams and it was great. Power must be where u need it. I will fly with the 286 thoug:) I think a young man must have a semi fast car at a stage. My dad hated my mods to my 16v at the time. So i think its very cool what u are doing.

We do have one advantage: since the car is build before 1995 we are alowed to change/alter the exhaust system. So we can put a (Devil) 4/2/1 exhaust manifold on it. And one extra advantage is that it is from 1991 and has no cat (clio 16v has a cat from 1993 on). I will have to put a lambda sonde in the exhaust when the car is on the dyno to tune the injection and ignition The Devil

some progress: my son working at his front bumper some very small imperfections (the very small brown spots in the middle of the picture is filler): they have to go, it must be perfect some parts of which we painted the inside earlyer this week: today we'll spray the final coat on the bumpers. Pictures will follow later on
