had the misfortune of my clutch slave cylinder popping on the beach today, had to drive home without clutch, was at least a quick fix, seal kit k7503x which is for the brake master cylinder fits the clutch slave as well and seems to work fine

Ay good brand engine oil. 20w50 Should be fine.
For the gearbox it must be GL5! Castrol has a nice 80w90 Gl5.

hi all, ok time to put the gearbox and transferbox back in ;D , i have bought 90w gearbox and dif oil, also some prolong( is this a good additive for the gearbox and transfer box? ).also bought new clutch kit...so all going in next weekend. any thoughts? regards shaune

Do not add any additives to your oil, unless you want to repair the box again some time soon. The additives creates a tar like residue on the bearings.
Don't you think if prolong was so good as they state it is that the oil componies would add it to the oil before selling it? Prolong claims that it has been tested by a lab, but they will not tell you what lab. Prolong contains teflon. Noe teflon is great on your breakfast pan of suspention bushes but not in your oil.
Please do not add it to the oil. Take it back and see if you can get a refund.
Regards
Charles
P.s Sorry about my rant and rave over it, but I will not allow somebody to add that shit to their car.

Hi Shaune
I don`t think it is a good idea to use any oil additive. Rather stick with the oil the way it was made. There has been discussions about GL4 or GL5 for the gearbox and I suggest using GL5. You could also use 85/130 for the diffs and transfer case, but not the gearbox.

Hi Charles
I see you agree with me on additives. I would never use them. All it does is makes someone rich at your expense. None of the suppliers can back up their claims.

I would use the following oils, Castrol GTX 20w50 in the engine. Castrol EP 75w90 GL5 in the gearbox, Castrol EPX 85w140 in the diffs, steering box and transfer case.

hi all.. OK.... after all that replacing clutch and thrust bearing, it still is making a noise.... .... i suspect it now to be a bearing inside the gearbox, either the from or rear bearing, possibly the idle bearing because it still is making a noise when i release the clutch and not when i press the clutch....is changing the bearings in the gearbox a moer of a job because i think that is my next bet....good lord striping it all over again.... ....not looking forward to it.... does anyone know more or less how much a gearbox place would charge to do the bearing change...or can a simpleton like me self with mechanical knowledge do the bearing myself regards, shaune

Do the bearings yourself. Not a difficult job. The workshop manual tells you exactly how to do it. You can order a complete bearing kit from Pavel for not too much money. How noisy is the box? By box is a bit noisy even though all the bearings are in perfect condition. These old fiat boxes are noisy buggers.

Hi
Just wondering what seals I can use to service the master and slave cylinders on Whitey.
I believe an Uno's will work for the slave, but which Uno?
Yes, there are probably other posts covering this topic, but I am bit pushed for time right now and can't look for it right now.
Basically the clutch keeps losing pressure and comes back with pumping the clutch, so I suspect it is the seals in the cylinders, also the fluid in the resevoir is black.

on boris the clutch slave takes the same seals as the brake master, uno kit k7503x

Fluid is black because the fluid is old and the rubber pipes are decaying.
Ari PS I have a set from Pavel that I don't need right now, I'll send it with your seals.

Remember to hone both cylinders with a very fine honing tool and liberally dose the seals with glycerine before fitting to pistons Spikes

Problem seems to be resolved, left it in the hands of my mechanic today, he took the cylinders apart, when to a factory that makes seals, got replacement seals and put them in. All seems fine from a shortish test drive. Will know more after longer drives tomorrow and Thursday.
I will get the name, address and number of the factory from him, I suspect it is in Robertsham, Johannesburg.

Hi Guys
I had a look a Niva today, car drives well clutch seems fine, no problem changing gears, was not able to test 5th as the was traffic. There was however a whining sound when the car was idling in neutral, push in the clutch sound gone. Any ideas if this will be a major or minor fix.

Sounds like Whitey with possible problems on the output shaft from the gearbox. I would start by checking the bearing on the output shaft from the gearbox.

ip sound like gearbox bearings. Just remember Niva boxes are fairly noisy. I have had my box open and all the bearings are fine but the box is still fairly noisy.

While the car is driving (in gear) the box is fine. it is when you release the pedal in neutral that there is a whining.
