Before you replace the bty give it all a thorough steam clean.

Stephan Just keep the cell caps screwed on if you give the battery a steam clean. While you are at it clean the INSIDE of the bty clamps with a coarse file or sandpaper around a dowel.

Hi Steven
It is not so much the charge current but the fact it should drop off, shortly after starting the car. If you have acid damage steam cleaning will not help much, rather wash everything down with water and bicarbonate of soda to neutralize the acid. Coke is also good to use and works fine. Repaint where needed.

Ronnie is correct but make sure it is a mix of water and bicarbonate of soda. You can also use a mix of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. First the bicarbonate and then you pour some vinegar over it. Some say Coke others say it is a myth?
Steam clean is for afterwards.

Hi Marius
Take your battery terminal and put it in a cup of coke and check later, you will see it is spotlessly clean. It is not recommended to drink the coke after use ;D
Ronnie
PS pepsi does not work !

Don't drink Coke or Pepsi (or any other soda for that matter) but if I had to make a choice I would choose the latter. Just imagine what Coke can do to your insides if it can do that to battery acid! Marius

Good day. Thanks for the comments - much appreciated. Bought a new Battery. Altenator taken to an Auto Electrician. No parts available.
Which After-Market Altenator can be used?
Please advise, this is rather urgent - rain is on it's way. More importantly Spring is around the corner and the flowers are budding.
Kind regards Stephen

Ari, it's over charging +17 Volts. Does not drop when lights, radio and fan is switched on.

Hi Steven
The easy way to answer is any decent make which will fit. preferably with a slightly bigger output.

Ari, just back home. The auto electrician said that the overcharging must have been over a long period. The wiring is black. The part with the ribs, I think it's called a stator, is also damaged. There's a rolled Lada somewhere in Wellington. I wish I know where. I'll make the best of this and have the Lad ready for Sunday's Church Service. Will use the wife's bakkie for tonight's Prayer Meeting. I'll post some pics. Regards Stephen.

Hi Steven
If you can it is better to fit a new alternator. That way you will then have local spares available if needed.

Ronnie that's the plan. I'll first need to get something with similar dimensions and a pulley / shaft to match. Will makeshift a bracket to adjust the fan belt. Should be ready, DV, by Saturday afternoon. Regards - Stephen

Hi Stephen / Ronnie
I fully agree , always try to "go local" as far as alty's are concerned.
Buying a second hand "original" one is never a long term solution !

Hi Steve
You may find the existing pulley will fit the new alternator. Use a straight edge to make sure the 3 pulleys are running in line.

Hi Steven
That was the best way to go, and you have the added bonus of a bigger output alternator.

That's some neat welding. Good choice on the 80amp alty. That is a future mod on the books for Meerkat aswell.

Spikes Good morning.
The Bosch was supplied with a Pulley. I've used another Washer behind the Pulley. Used a 16mm + 14mm lenght bush to align the Alternator. The current bushes is ordinary galvanised pipe. Will get better bushes later on. This just to get the car running again.
I've still got the Lada's original Alternator.

Hi Stephen Thank you for the feedback. Why do you require other bushes? The galv pipe should last as they are only used as spacers? Regards Spikes

Hi Spikes
If you use galv pipe the hole in the centre will be to big and the hole should fit the bolt properly.
