For the price yes it is worthwhile.
The steering box is adjustable. The steering boxes also normally leak oil, so it may be low on oil.

If you can get it for R15 00 it will be a huge bargain.

Hi Guys
At first I thought R15000 would be a bargain to, but I have just been to see it and there are a couple more issues. The owner claimed the car is in running condition, the car has been standing at a workshop for a while trying to sort out the steering. While this was happenong apparently the fuel went bad?, the battery died and the plugs need to be relaced. So I guess I have to treat it as a non runner. If you guys could help me with the costs of reparing a few things I could determine if I should make an offer.
1) Replace rear windsceen 2) Replace Spare wheel 3) Remove surface rust and respay 4) Replace both mirrors 5) Replace centre dashbosrd console 6) Steering rack (I would have to consider the worst case scenorio) 7) Major Service 8) New Battery
I need to know if it would be a better idea to buy a rebuild.
Thanks

I would like to do a bit of both, but I think I would be happier if it where in some form of running condition to start with. At the moment it is a shot in the dark so I guess I will have to make some low offer to cover myself. Unfourtuneately nor everyone is honest when selling a car if a repair is something minor that greatly affects the price of the car you would have fixed it.

Hi Wayne
Buying a Lada which is not in a running condition is indeed very risky.
The fact that you are not able to take the Lada for a test drive, means there is no way how you would be able to check quite a number of possible problems on the Lada.
If the body was still in perfect condition it might have been worthwhile to bite the bullet, but I think you need to be very careful . Many things could need serious attention.

Hi Wayne
Just make sure the paper work is in order. Licence to be in the SELLERS name or the owner must provide you with the transfer papers before you hand any monies over. The most difficult to obtain could be the steering box if that is really shot. Did you speak to Mike on the forum. He should be able to provide info on CT based NIVAs. He is based in Durbanville
Good luck

............ but I think I would be happier if it where in some form of running condition to start with. At the moment it is a shot in the dark ........ Hi Spikes I initially though so too - but the quoted comment (above) made me think that the initial test drive was not a proper test drive at all. Danie

Hi Guys
What would the cost of a gearbox, engine, starter and steering box be. The reason I ask is that I am currently looking at various options so knowing what certain things cost could maybe help me avoid making to many mistakes.

Hi Waynef,
It is not realistic to get the prices of the big items you mentioned. Marius is very clued up with the consumer protection act and may advise what your rights are if you want to buy on certain conditions.
It may make more sense to get a ball-park figure to professionally overhaul the items you are concerned about than to buy/consider new. Please get your quotes from Ventz or Mike, nobody else in SA.
My advice is: if you do not trust the vehicle do not decide to buy it or not. Get somebody in the know to make the call. If you do not know somebody like that walk away from the deal. There are many other vehicles available. A vehicle that does not move is not a vehicle; it is a standing.
Vehicles that do not run should be bought at scrapyard prices and not dealer prices.
I hope the above is of some help.
Regards,
Fanus

Hi Fanus
Thanks for the reply, my skill level when it comes to fixing cars is basic so I will be looking for one in a decent condition. I will then focus my energy on keeping and maybe improving the condition of the vechile. I will also use some of the services offered by the members this forum has giving me the confidence to purchase this vechile, so I know if I need help it will be there
