Hi Marius and the rest of the LOCSA Management team, The attachment appears in the latest CAR magazine. It casts a bit of a slur our way. I seem to remember the picture from a "ru" site of NIVA pictures. I doubt that is any of the members vehicles. Note that it is a 4 door model as well. Perhaps a letter from the team to put CAR's editorial staff in the picture regarding LOCSA and the dedication of owners to their NIVA's And a picture or two of the Ronster ;D Regards Spikes

Hi Spikes Thanks for posting. I think I have mentioned it somewhere that in the year 2000 I wrote to Car Magazine requesting that they feature a picture of the Niva in their Magazine. They never responded to my request and to my knowledge they never obliged - UNTIL NOW ;D One of our members is a moto journo and he logs into the forum quite regulary and he can perhaps gives better and a more correct insight to this, but my take on the matter is that some moto journos get's sponsored by auto makers to drive around in their cars for a month or two. These cars gets "tested" by the journos and are then featured in the magazines - like Car Magazine. More often than not these cars get a very favourable write up and the job is done until the next car gets "tested". Now if a journo is given a choice between - as an example - a BMW X5 and a Lada Niva, the choice of what car to drive becomes rather difficult ;D Anyway - the point is - if they are to publish something like a rust bucket (naturally Vincent's luv bucket excluded ) they will not use the BMW X5 for that purpose - in order not to "strain" relations with that particular manufacturer who pays for the flashy adds, but would rather go for something way off the radar like our beloved Niva. It's all about bread and butter to me but I could be wrong Marius

By the way that Niva is the 5 door version as pointed out already and the tyres are also not the vli-10 type but a latter model which did not make it to our shores - so it id NOT a SA Niva.

Hi Marius Which is exactly the point I am trying to make. By publishing a picture of a fairly scarce car in RSA and NOT even using a South African model we as NIVA owners are being set up as irresponsible. Check the caption on the picture again.

Spikes I forgot to mention that I will take it up with Car Magazine - but don't hold your breath for a response from them ;D
AND I agree with what you say Spikes - we are being "abused".

Well, here is a roadworthy Lada Niva for Car Magazine. Eat that! ;D Me thinks that if Sam McCrorie and Car Magazine wants to talk about "at least 20 per cent (sic) of oncoming vehicles" not being roadworthy, then they should not publish a picture of the bottomus of a vehicle not likely to be seen on said road. ;D ;D ;D Oh, if Sam's specific complaint is about lights not working on vehicles, why are they showing a rust bucket? Another point: Me wonders when the Traffic Department will start clamping down on the Sandton-cruizers with their new funky (misdirected?) HID's that blind the crap out of a person. Not that I mind 'cause I have enough spots to beam a truck of the road. ;D ;D ;D Agh, just my 2c. ;D

Now the Rusti may well be that, but I bet the brakes, lights and tyres are in a better condition than most HiAces. We as Lada owners in SA spend more time getting our cars perfect(ish) than other marques do. Take their swipe at truly rotten cars - Like a Dacia Pick up. www.automobileromanesti.ro/images/mari/Dacia/dacia_1304-4.jpg Grrr. Cancel that CAR mag gift subscription...

Well guys here goes...nothin... "To whom it may concern In the year 2000 I wrote to your magazine requesting that you feature a picture of the Lada Niva in at least one of the many 4x4 routes you feature on a regular basis. Your magazine never responded to my request and to my knowledge never obliged - UNTIL NOW! A picture of a badly rusted Niva featured on page 112 of the October 2011 edition of your magazine and was brought to my attention by one of our members of the Lada Owners Club of South Africa (LOCSA). The member(s) feel that the picture gives the wrong impression - that people who drive Lada Niva's don't really care about their cars. The contrary is actually true as is evident from our vibrant online forum locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi LOCSA has grown significantly over the last year or so to well over 260 members (both local and internationally). We all have one thing in common - we love our quirky little cars and against all odds, we've established a strong support base to maintain and keep these cars in good shape for many years to come. It is clear from the worldwide online exposure that the Niva can be safely be regarded as one of the most popular cars in the world. If you ever want to feature a good quality picture of a Lada Niva in your magazine, we have many eager members ready to oblige! Kind regards Marius van Rensburg LOCSA Chairperson "

Hi all We got a response from Car Magazine. For what its worth I think they at least now know about LOCSA! "Good day The Editor thanks you for your e-mail which has been read with interest. If selected for publication, it will appear in the Forum/Technimail section of CAR, together with an answer (if applicable), within the next few months. If it was an e-mail intended for a particular person and/or department, it has been sent to them for a possible response. Regrettably, the large volume of correspondence we receive means that we will not be able to reply to each and every letter. Thank you, CAR magazine" Marius

Now that I look at it again it does look a bit automated I will give it a while and see if I actually get a response, and Spikes suggestion of the Carblog sounds like a good avenue to pursue. Marius
