Ok thanks Spikes How do you get the bushes out? Ari Ari with great difficulty ;D you can try an oversize bolt as an eeze-out but turn clockwise. It is easy if you have new replacement units on hand. Drill them out. Just oil them as Calla says. I see the manual also refers to a "blank plug" that has to be punched..after replacing new bushes. Spikes

Do it with the bush in place. Just press the oil into it. Spikes the nissans have bronze pilot shaft bushes. Do you know how many boxes i have had to remove because of those bushes becoming dry over time. Charles In the 50's I helped my dad overhaul the starter on our Morris. I was totally amazed by the fact that a person could squeeze oil through metal(the bronze bushes). The Japanese fingers are to small to seal and pressurize the pilot bushes ;D

Hi Ari
That sounds very interesting.
If I do understand you correctly, there is a definite difference on the steering boxes on some of our local Ladas ??

In Europe 1600's and 1700's have different steering boxes

The earlier 1700 have long input shafts and therefore a shorter steering linkage. The later ones have a longer steering linkage but a shorter input shaft. The difference is 100mm. I think it is to make it easier to remove the steering box and refit.

Danie the length of the rod will not make a difference in how heavy the steering is. Its just the rod from the steering wheel to the steering box.

Spikes, I have this steering box on. I placed it immediately when I bought my Niva. On the side of the box write "GEMMER FRANCE". I don't know something else. Here we call it "French steering box".....that's all !!!!! ;D ;D

Spikes there is lots of info on Gemmer steering boxes on the net. Coulnt find the company that manufacturers them. Looks like they are used on lots of older vehicles. I do not know if they are a replacement for unavailable steering boxes.
