Interesting thread!....I had a theory on the vibrations that may be completely way off track....But here goes: The car is designed to have a spare tyre in the engine bay, as such the motor is off to one side. When I take the spare out of the car and look from the rear, the right side is leaning down, just a bit....Gentle weight at the left front causes the right rear to become level. When the tyre is in its designed position, no vibrations. If its not there, subtle vibrations. In the reading I have done, I rarely find Russians worrying about vibrations....Maybe the weight in the engine bay evens out the balance and lessens the vibrations......Possible???

I haven't noticed any appreciable difference to the vibrations, whether the sparewheel is in the car or not. My vibrations definitly seem linked to the gearbox/transfer case.

I eventually got my lada vibrations sorted out, back prop shaft.
I tested it on the n1 the other night, driving front wheel. I tested it upto 150km/h with no vibrations. :-)
I just want to know what is the acceptable play on the front gearbox?
Regards, Allen

[quote author=kingswood board=technical ....Maybe the weight in the engine bay evens out the balance and lessens the vibrations...... [/quote] Engine dont sit in the middle, so left side is heavier. Here a pic of lifted Niva in balance. Far awy from the middle: The wood is only for safty, it is not faked. Nearly exact 50cm in total. Middle is 25, Niva stand stable at 19,5cm. It is about 20% out of balance! I have no more problems with noisy drive ;D I tested many drive shaft and finally found the perfect: I dont drive more than 120km/h, until this speed nerly no vibrations... sometimes i start forgetting i drive Niva and think to drive a normal car Only needed adaption is very little work. Gear box fixing arm must be little bit flexed and little welding to get more space to the shaft: Sorry, i never find them in web. Got them from a friend in Serbia. Gabor can get them, i am shure. Tell if you need more deteiled pics. greets Jakob

My 2c on engine postition...
This is an off road vehicle and deigned to operate at various angles? Why would the car not vibrate with a spare wheel and not without one?
What happens to the theory when you ad aa passenger on the left which a substantial more weight than a spare wheel and its now leanining towards the other side?
remeber the vechle was designed to be Left hand drive as well, theory again doesnt hold up...
Engine position is not because of the spare wheel, but rather the offsett transfer box which caused the engine to move in order to align driveshafts and not to accomadate the spare wheel?
There is more than ample space below the trunkspace underneath the car to have fitted it or even on the back as a kia sportage or land rover?
I emphasise the fact that this is my opinion and not an attack on anyone, rather food for thought and my 2c!
I converted to 2wd so worries for me!
happy nivaing ;D
