Hi Ronnie
What would the advantage te using the stock thermostat or a bmw one, if it fits, instead of the one in the top hose? Or why do you prefer it?

Hi Charles
I had to grind my thermostat to get it to fit in the top hose and apart from that I like to stay original if possible.

Hi Ronnie
The grinding is more than enough reason. Mine fits in without problems. Will see how it goes. Do you maybe know the model of BMW?

Is there a generic oil seal available for the output shaft on the gearbox. I seem to recall that a list of localy available parts existed on the forum but I cant find it.

People say no. But phone Bearing man. They can get you any size seal. Even the hub seals for a niva. This is what a local niva owner told me. He replaced all the seals on his niva with seals from them.

Hi Guys, thanks for your prompt response. This must be it: Gearbox Output Seal - PartQuip 325610 "32-56-10", posted by Hercules. I don't know how I missed that thread, 'cause I checked the technical section first.

Hi Wim
I would also try Bearing Man - just give them the seal measurements ( 32 - 56 - 10 ) as indicated by Hercules.
32 = Seal ID (Inside Diameter) 56 = Seal OD (Outside Diameter) 10 = Seal width.
But bear in mind that there are different quality seals on the market. I would as go for a Viton seal if available. It will be more expensive though.

Just thought a note about the aftermarket waterpumps at Autozone should be made under this Thread as well: Saleri aftermarket waterpumps are available at branches of Autozone countrywide. Ask for "Saleri waterpump - Part No. PA 231" Do not ask for a "Lada Niva waterpump" - they will deny that they do carry any stock .Current price : R330.00 excl. VAT. Thanks to Spikes for investigating this source. Danie

Could you see any retaining screw on the water pump?

Hi Wim
I would strongly advise you to purchase a genuine gearbox rear seal. I wasted money on 2 aftermarket seals both of which lasted precisely2 days. I then fitted a genuine seal which has given no problems. If I remember correctly there was a big difference in the operating temperature of the seals. I think the original was rated at 135 deg and the aftermarket one about 85. The original was double the price, at about R75. I strongly advise you to use original seals.

Found this pic of an apparent Fiat 128 clutch disk - looks very similar to the original Lada one. Attachments:

Hi all Probably the closest match on the steering box would be the Fiat 124 >> www.turbo124.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7571I think Charles had an idea of replacing it with a steering rack - I like that idea and it may well be a better option Regards Marius

Lada windscreens are available at Glasfit branches at R2800.00.
Part No 2092301
The windscreens get manufactured in Johannesburg .
I have visited Glasfit Pinetown today, and the information has been supplied by the branch manager, Mr Kevin Paliyathan (cell no. 084 701 6802, or (031) 7020943.

Hi Guys
Has anybody found a local replacement radiator cap for the deep type radiator filler neck? Since my father had a stroke about 2 months ago I do regular trips to Kareedouw from PE and noticed that I have to fill the radiator more often than when I do short trips in PE. After eliminating leaks and internal leaking of the head gasket I noticed that my radiator cap does not seal on the inside flange of the filler neck. This means that the water just pushes out into the reservoir freely when hot. And since my reservoir has n hole on the side it just runs out the hole.
Thanks in advance
Hein

Hi Hein
There is no local after market radiator cap available that I have been able to find. I am sure Ventz or another dealer will have stock.

Hi all
Someone mentioned the fan belt before but I could not find the thread.
According to my local spares supplier the Niva's fan belt should be PG217 but I found it too short. The Russian belt is about 1 cm longer therefor the PG218 should be the correct fit.
I also carried a PG219 as a spare but it would not have worked at all - just too long.

Hi Marius
PG218 would be the correct one though I found the PG217 a better fit. This may be because I do not have the original alternator.

Hi Koos I have no idea but it could be very hard to find as there is a special bracket that fits over the water pump. If you have the bracket maybe you can adapt something to fit? If you have good DIY skills then anything is possible Regards Marius

Hi all I fitted the PG218 fan belt and it is a good fit. Slightly wider than the original and slightly shorter. The Russian one could have stretched over the years but I never fitted it too tightly nursing those bearings in the water pump. The original fan belt can now go into retirement after it served me well and it is still in very good shape to serve as a spare - just in case Marius

I suppose it can be welded, but not sure if that will last.
I thought of strengthening it by welding another layer of thin sheet metal on top of the current (broken) fitting. Will also see if there is a way to add another fitting to the cowl, I not too sure if the single one is sufficient to hold it in the long run.
Thanks Koos

Hi Spikes
You won't find an aftermarket that looks like the inner boot - but a similar boot to the one on the left will work fine.
I had the "pleasure" of replacing my inner boot years ago with one I got from Centurion that looks like the one on the left. I presume the outer one will be an easier job?

Hi Marius As the the shaft is out I am replacing both. If Jan supplied you with the left hand one on the picture, it is another negative mark on his slate. Regards Spikes
