Good Evening Guys....some thoughts and help please. A couple of times recently I've turned the key to start CERATOTH and nothing happens ! No strange noises, no clicking sounds, nothing at all. Turn the key off, back on again and all is fine, starter turns and off we go. Battery seems fine, all dashboard lights are OK and CERATOTH is running like a dream. What is / are the possibles cause(s) for this 'problem' and should I be 'afraid' or even 'very afraid' Regards and best wishes to all. Keith and CERATOTH

Hi Keith
Firstly check the power supply wire on the starter, make sure its secure and not corroded. Then check the wire on the solenoid. Make sure it is secure and the wire isn't worn through or broken somewhere. Same with the one on the starter. To me it sounds like a solenoid not kicking in. Next time it does it let someone else turn the key for you and measure the voltage on the solenoid. Should be battery voltage. If there is no power when the key is turned check the wire higer up all the way to the starter relay.
This problem sounds like either the solenoid that is on its way out or a power supply problem. That can either be a broken wire or the starter relay that is on its way out.
Let me know what you find. If you want I will send you my cell number and you can phone me.

Hi Keith If the solenoid is the cause of the problem and you can't find one locally, I think you can just send Pavel an e.mail with full details (part number on starter and close photo of solenoid /. starter) No solenoid is listed on Pavel's website ( ladapower.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=19&Itemid=87 ) , but he will find any part you need. Just make sure that Pavel knows exactly what your solenoid looks like - there are different brands of starters / solenoids on the local Ladas. Danie

Hi Keith
Where Charles says to check further up to the solenoid he means relay not solenoid. The solenoid is on the starter and the relay is behind the dash. I can`t remember exactly where the starter relay is, but it is either behind the glove box or behind the bonnet lever. I can`t check mine as I moved them all as the Air Con would have covered them. If you have power at the solenoid it will be the solenoid or the connections to it.

Thanks guys for all your help. Looks like it was a 'dodgey' relay (which is behind the glove box and a real 'pig' to get to). Got a new one from Lada Centurion....thanks again Michelle... and all seems fine. Also discovered that the cigarette lighter was broken....fixed that and now I can charge the cellphone as I drive. Please note 'not use the cellphone' just recharge. Life is Good :-) Regards and thanks again for all the advice. Keith and CERATOTH

Hi Keith
The next time you need a relay go to the nearest spares shop and ask for a 4 pin relay, bosch or hella, and you will save money. I would prefer bosch as the hella are now made in china and I had 2 dud ones out of 8 the last time.

Thanks for that Ronnie. I didn't know what I should ask for and couldn't take the old one in as I needed it to start the Niva and I didn't know where it was hidden. As to Chinese 'stuff' I really am getting fed up with doing the Quality Control function for them. I bought a "Snappy"(part of the Clipsal Group) 15 amp plug top yesterday. Got it home, broke the seal to open the plug up and two out of the three wire holding screws were misssing ! Perhaps I'm just getting really 'grumpy' in my old age but I do remember the days when things worked the first time that you got them home and you did not have to make return visits to the store. Regards to all, Keith and CERATOTH.

Hi Keith
I don`t know where Clipsal manufacture but they are Australian. I used to buy 1000`s of 4x2 5 amp socket outlets for down lighters from Crabtree and 50% of the terminal screws would be rolling about in the bottom of the box. Complaints to the factory made no difference. If I complained they would send me 1000 new screws to replace the ones that were missing, instead of fixing the problem. They are made in RSA!!!

Hi Keith
I have just remembered if anyone has wipers on the headlights the relay is the sams except it is 5 pin. If anyone wants to add these wipers the wiring is all there and the socket for the relay is lying in the same place as the starter relay.

'Socket for the headlight wipers relay is lying in the same place as the starter relay'...which is really easy to get at if you are double-jointed, can rotate all three of your hands through 360 degrees and can push the relay in with the strength of a white rhino (with all horns intact). Have fun ;-) Regards and best wishes, Keith and CERATOTH

The way my tyres self-clean, you would see even less, as all the mud would be on your lada windscreen.

Hi Ronnie,
One of the lessons I have learned on this forum is to nowadays check electric and electronic items before trusting it as spares/replacements in the bush) - even the trusted brands of earlier years. Thank you.

The 'snapper' (Clypso ?) plug top I bought is stamped 'MADE IN CHINA' so I guess that that is where the factory moved to ! Regards, Keith and CERATOTH (Soon to be renamed Bejing R Us )

Hi Keith
The other option is to ask Li to connect the solenoid for you.
Her nimble fingers will not require the insectile articulation that you have descibed. ;D

Hi Vincent, when it comes to 'fixing things' on CERATOTH, Li's nimble finger would be her middle finger on the left hand. Unlike of course when she is driving around her father's (part owner) game farm when it is all fingers on the steering wheel and having such a wonderful time driving in low range that I don't get a lookin until its time to come back home....then I'm 'allowed' to drive to the local petrol station and fill back up with petrol. Have to admit though....Li is a really good 'off road' driver. :-) Regards to all Keith and CERATOTH (and Li)
