Hi guys I think the workings of a diff and the different type of lockers that you get is probably the most misunderstood subject in 4x4 lingo. I found this very simple but effective way of explaining the diff at Land Cruisers Owners Online. Diffs for Dummies (no pun intended ;D) My understanding of it all is that the centre diff should only be locked when you are about to drive through very rough terrain where wheel slip is expected. Engage the center diff lock. i.e. Up and down hills, thick sand, mud, ice, snow and uneven surfaces. A must read>> www.lcool.org/technical/diffs/diffs.htmlMarius

There is a small section on how to operate the diff lock in the Lada's Operation Manual:
"The differential should be timely locked to drive through heavy sections of cross- country roads. [In Russia that = no road ;D]
Never lock the differential when both wheels on one of the driving axles are slipping. Never forget to unlock the differential after you have passed such roads - driving on good roads with locked differential reduces the life of the power train, adds to tyre wear and fuel consumption and can result in skidding during braking.
If the differential is difficult to unlock whilst driving, stop the vehicle to do it.
Changing into higher gears and differential lock-up can be done during driving."

Diff lock required ;D This is what the Russians meant in the Operation Manual when they stated "The differential should be timely locked to drive through heavy sections of cross- country roads." The Highway from Hell >> www.ssqq.com/archive/vinlin27c.htmMarius PS - forgot to mention the one in Bolivia!
