Hi All I need some help here!!!!!! My 1.7i is using fuel faster than I can put it in. Was about 4.3km/l and now about 5.6km/l after I put in a new air filter and plugs. It is running quite rich. Turbo-nutter says I should change the Coolant Temp Sensor and maybe the thermostat. He says that if the sensor is faulty, the default mode is cold, which would make computer think that the motor is cold, which would account for the rich running. According to the pamphlet that Ronnie posted we should get at least 9km/l, which would really be a bonus. I would like to know if anyone knows of a generic sensor and/or thermostat that we can get here. You guys have scared me off Jan. Any other tips would be appreciated. Keep up the good work. Regards Des

Hi Des
I have never seen an Injected Niva so would not know what the temp sensor looks like. As far as the thermostat is concerned I would import a replacement thermostat rather than going the modified route.

Hi Des
I have no experience with regard to the injector models. The max temp on the Niva should be 90-95 with a standard thermostat. I also think the disk would probably be a good investment.
Recently I got more than 10km/l on a long distance trip and the car was heavily loaded. Mine is a carb model though but my experience is that once you push the car over 120km/h it tends to get heavy on the fuel. A nice economical cruising speed is 100-110km/h.

Hi Des
Unfortunately I also do not have any knowledge about the Fuel Injection models.
Like Ari and Marius said, I also believe that a computer disc could be essential to solve problems like this. Only problem is that I do not know whether Andy's disc is suitable for South African models or not.
I would advice you to phone Chris Swales (Pinetown), to find out whether your Lada is a TBI, later Bosh multi point, (or whatever) model. If Andy's disc could be used on your Lada, I would definately go for it.
Sorry that we scared you off, but I believe that we should be honest to each other at all times.
Please keep us posted about this issue.
Regards
Danie

where is your needle on the temp guage? ? should be sitting around the middle (90o) thermostats are 88o if your car is running around that temp, thermostat should be fine. if needed cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170488747152&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:ITthe temp switch for the computer (fits into branch pipe top hose fits to) is more often than not the problem (or poor quality fuel, remember these are meant to run on 95 octane) remember to help economy, run the niva tyres around 36psi

whoops, forgot to say,i was told apparently the multi point wasn't until about 2000 on
the throttle body type just looks like a carb mounted under the air cleaner

Thank you all for the input. Sorry, I forgot to mention, mine's a 2001 TBI... i.e. a single point injector. Good point, Andy. My temp runs at about 90o and at about 95o when at work, so thermostat should be fine. I read, on one of the other forums, that the GM/Daewoo models have the same temp sensor as the Niva. Is this true, Andy? I also read that the TBI. was designed to better the fuel consumption on these Nivas, so I definately have a problem. Another point: Some days Bruce runs like a bomb and others, he's just OK. But always bad fuel consumption with the rich fuel smell. I also get the "Check Engine " light coming on intermittently, but when I check the codes there is no problem. Des

Hi Des
If you have a "rich fuel smell" you might have a leak somewhere. Check all the fuel lines while the engine is running. If the smell is in the car - check the fuel lines in and out of the tank. The vapour separator might be broken - but that will not effect fuel consumption though.

sorry Des,
can't confirm gm/daewoo model sensors......we only buy genuine.
you'd have to be 100% it's the right one,may screw in etc.,but give different readings to puter.
the tbi definetly gives better economy & torque. (more efficient) we have a number of customers getting well over 400kms out of a tank.

Eureka, I've found it!!!!!!!!! Yes, Gentleman, we seem to have found the problem. Vacuum pipe ruptured between MAP Sensor(Manifold Absolute Pressure) and the Throttle Body. Replaced (R10,50c) and the woema is back. I now watch in anticipation, with eye on the fuel gauge, to see the consumption. Thank you all for the support and advice. That's whats so lekker about a Lada, there is so much research and scratching that when you drive them, you can see the oil running through the oil jackets in your minds eye. ITS ALIIIIIVE..........................................................

Hi Des
I am really glad that you managed to solve the problem.
If you have any problems in future, you could also try Ventz (082 9235055) - a Russian guy who finds himself in Pietermaritzburg.
Ventz is a former Lada mechanic, and as far as I know, he still works on Ladas. I once phoned him, and he really sounds very helpful.

Danie

Thanks, Danie. I can now confirm that Bruce is running at 10,4km/l and still counting. The power is also good again. Another happy customer. Thanks, once again. Question? So, Andy. When can we expect you to come and visit? To improve inter-continental relations..... Maybe set up a Lada branch........ Maybe watch some real rugger..... and stuff? Des

Hi Ari
I would say 10 km/l would be fair. I have never checked mine accurately but I think the last time I filled it, it had done about 390 kms which would not be far off as there was still petrol in the tank.

Hi guys.
I've got a problem with my lada's fuel consumption. I'm running at 15lt/100km. Its really killing me at the moment.
Its still the original solex carb. I've cleaned up the carb. Put a new gasket in between the carb and air filter. Its running smoothly, but really heavy on fuel.
I don't know what to do. Could anyone help me out here.
Cheers
Warren

Hi Warren First thing you should do is to check all the pipes for any leaks. The second thing is to check the timing and adjust the CO2 levels accordingly. Hopefully that will help a bit Regards Marius

Hi Warren.
Your Lada is a bit heavy on petrol. The Lada is not very light on fuel in town. I drive mine everyday in hectic traffic which take an average of 1hour to do 24km and my consumption is between 12.5 and 13 l/100km.
Regards.

Good morning All. Please, can you perhaps publish some fuel consumption figures for the Lada Niva 1.7 Carbed Engine Model? or Perhaps point to a discussion if it was previously discussed.
Thanks a mil Stephen
