Hi guys
Not actually a conversion as such - but I have always thought about the possibility of moving the starter motor to a more accessible part of the engine compartment - on the other side of the engine where there is lots of space?
Danie once posted some pics of the alternator being moved onto the left side of the engine - would it be possible to do something similar with the starter?

Hi Marius
I don`t think you can do it with the existing clutch housing. I seem to remember some other Lada or fiat housing that has the starter on the other side that fits, but can`t remember which forum it was on, though I think it was the UK one.

The Lancia 2L motor has it that way.

Thanks guys
In short - unless you can get a suitable bell housing it is no go.
Pity - my motor is still working nicely after all these years - but the starter probably needs a service every now and then - which would make it so much easier.

Hi Marius
If you take the front exhaust pipe off you can service the starter and the steering box at the same time ;D. Two birds with one stone ;D

Hi Marius
Apparently the Fiat 131 bellhousings are a strait fit to the Lada engines, and as mentioned under the "Opel engine" thread, on some versions of the Fiat 131 cars the starter motors have been mounted on the passenger side.
So if one could get hold of a a suitable Fiat 131 bellhousing, a conversion seems to be very possible............
