Hi Guys
Just thought I had to share this mail that I received after asking a East European that knows the Lada inside out about the life span of the timing chain. His reply was:
"The chain should last over 100000km. The surest way to destroy it is tensioning on a cold engine, that way it is ovestressed by the warming up, causing extra stress and wear. So you can finish off the chain in just 2 months.
This double chain is otherwise extremely durable. Some recless people drive it so long that the upper tensioner shoe is knocked down by the free wobbling chain and the uppe left corner inside of the head begins to be eaten away like by a chainsaw. 300000km for sure until this double chain falls apart."
The part about adjusting when hot is interesting and it makes sence.

Hi Hein
I tensioned mine when I was reassembling mine and was obviously done cold. It is easy to do it the next time it is warm. I would expect to run 300000 on a duplex chain providing it is properly tensioned and lubricated.

Hi Guys
Following the advice contained in this thread I had the timing chain checked prior to having a new starter fitted yesterday and everything was fine. ;D ;D ;D The pin was sticking out a long way – I didn’t measure it but I would say about 4mm.
The engine sounds very smooth and as the ‘strange’ noise that I referred to earlier in this thread and under STARTER MOTOR WOES has disappeared I presume Charles was correct and it had something to do with the starter running with the engine and wasn't chain related.
Thanks for all of the advice!!

Glad it sorted. A nice running engine is the best sound on earth.
