my only tip is to remove the timing chain damper(white one) before you remove the head otherwise it breaks.

Hi Dewald
Set the timing marks before you start stripping and make sure the crank does not get turned over. Take the shoe out as well to properly check for wear

Thanks Ari What about the timing chain tensioner You need to remove it to get enough slack on the chain to get it off the cam sprocket. Agree with Spikes, set the marks up to TDC before you strip, you can take the tappet cover off first to check the camshaft timing, there is a small hole in the sprocket. Ari

The Repair Manual explains it all very well - esp the vital part about the timing marks. If you get that wrong you are screwed. If you follow the manual (and Ari's tip) everything should be fine, but don't worry I also dread the day I will have to do it ;D

Hi Dewald Replacing the head gasket is fairly easy, but there are a couple of things which are important to know - before you start stripping anything. Please feel free to call me on my cell for more information - it will be a lot easier for me to explain (after 5.30 PM on any given day) over the telephone. Just a warning - there are a couple of simple things which you need to know - or you could be facing: 1. A couple of bent valves . 2. The possibility that you are going to "sukkel jouself simpel" to start the engine again. Before you do phone me, just have a look at the photos which have been posted at this thread. The thread is actually about the replacement / inspection of the Tensioner Shoe - but some of the pics and comments are very relevant to a Head Gasket replacement: www.locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=technical&action=display&thread=1125I will explain when you give me a call. Replacing the head gasket on a niva is a breeze compared to other cars. To me the hardest part was to loosen the exhaust flange. I made the mistake of using gedore socket to loosen the head bolts and stripped one of the bolts. If u use a hex tipe u wil be fine. Also make shure your bolts are not to long. They stretch a bit every time u use them. Or so i have been told by centurion lada. Good luck and regards Ruan
